Visiting an Inmate in the Ada County Jail in Idaho

Boise, Idaho is perhaps best known for its potato's and a college football team that has a very distinctive blue playing field. The fact is, though, that it also has one of the most modern jails in the country when it comes to visitation. The Ada County jail system hold true to the belief that imates have a right to see their families, no matter how heinous the crime they may have committed. With that in mind, they have implemented a state of the art system that makes visitation time a whole lot more easy to run. Read on to find out exactly what it is that the Ada County jail in Idaho does that is different from so many other jails across the United States.

Visiting Rules

The Ada County jail has found a way to take much of the hassle out of visitation by implementing a video visitation system that allows you to see your loved ones on your own schedule. There is no need to even make a trip to the jail, as visitation can be done over the internet, with limitations on when you can connect few and far between. This new system cuts out much of the waiting times, noise and privacy issues, and other annoyances that are usually seen with regular visitation schedules. Here is what you need to know about Ada County jail video visitation:

  • You will need a webcam, microphone, speakers, and a high speed internet access in order to be able to connect
  • You can connect from anywhere that has all of those available, with very few restrictions put on the days and times that you can connect
  • Inmates are allowed to have a pair of 25-minute visits for free each week. They are also given the option to buy more if they so desire
  • You can set up an account at the Ada County sheriff's website using your e-mail. The inmate will need this e-mail address in order to be able to create a visitation link
  • Either yourself or the inmate can schedule a video visit, with the link in the e-mail needing to be clicked in order for the visitation to be confirmed
  • If the link is not delivered or clicked, or some other problem arises, either yourself or the inmate will need to set up a new scheduled date and time
  • Keep in mind that all visitations are subject to recording, so be careful about sharing any sort of personal information

Visiting Hours

One of the great things about the video visitation system used in the Ada County jail is how convenient it is. Most jails have a very strict visitation schedule that will not be changed for anyone. This can often lead to family members having to lose valuable time at work so that they can adhere to the schedule. That is not the case with the video system though, with visits able to b scheduled anywhere between 9am and 9.30 pm MST.

Some things to keep in mind are that you cannot schedule a visit on the current day, but you can schedule a visitation up to 6 days in advance. The 25 minute sessions start on the hour and the half-hour, not from the moment that you login. There will be a clock displayed on the top right hand corner of the screen while your visitation is in progress. Keep a close eye on that, as the visitation will automatically cut off once the 25 minutes have passed.

How to use the Inmate Search for Ada County Jail in Idaho

Every jail system across the United States sees large numbers of inmates come and go each and every day. The Ada County jail is no different, which can often make tracking down an inmate a little bit challenging. It is not anywhere near as difficult now as it used to be, and all of the credit for that has to go to the internet. Each county now has an inmate search tool of some kind located on the sheriff's department website, and it is usually up to date enough to allow you to track down who you are looking for in a matter of seconds.

The Ada County jail has a very effective search tool on the sheriff's website, and it can be accessed by clicking the ‘Jail Inmate Listing' tab on the menu on the left hand side of the main page. Once you arrive, you will be given three different ways to search for an inmate, which are:

  • Alphabetical listing by last name
  • A box to type in the last name, with the first three letters more than enough to yield results
  • An a to z menu that allows you to click on individual letters.

Whichever method you choose to find who you are looking for, you will be led to a great deal of information about each inmate, which includes:

  • Mug shot
  • Name
  • LE Number
  • Assigned Cell
  • Arresting Agency
  • Severity
  • Charges

You will see that the name of the inmate is clickable, which actually leads to a very cool feature that not every county puts into practice. That next page allows you to register for any updates that may arise concerning the inmate you are looking for. This is ideal to have in case they are moved on very short notice. When you arrive at the main search page, you will also notice the date and time of the last update. If you don't find the person you are looking for, it could be because they were placed in the system after that last page update.

Communicating with an Inmate Housed at the Ada County Jail in Idaho

The communication possibilities and guidelines; writing, phone calls, visitation.

Sending mail is something that we all somewhat take for granted, even though it is not the most common way to communicate anymore. Letter writing may be going out of fashion, but it is still one of the best ways to keep in contact with a loved one in jail. The Ada County jail system is more than happy to accommodate mail to inmates, but under a very strict set of rules. Letters might even become a little less popular at Ada County, thanks to their impressive visitation system, but let's take a look at what you need to do when sending a piece of mail to a loved one in jail.

Mail

Writing a letter and dropping it in the mail box is pretty straightforward, but when mailing to the Ada County jail, you will want to make sure to follow a few rules so that your letter will reach its intended recipient:

  • There must be no drawings or colored markings of any kind on the front or back of the envelope
  • All mail is subject to search and scan to ensure that it does not contain any illegal items
  • The front of the envelope must be clearly marked with the following: Inmate's full name and the address of the jail, which is C/O Ada County Jail, 7210 Barrister Dr., Boise, ID 83704

There are definite restrictions as to what can be sent in the mail. If you include any of the following items when you send the letter, they will be caught during inspection and your mail will go undelivered. Here is a list of banned items:

  • Images of a sexual nature
  • Intimidating or threatening statements
  • Code words of some kind that cannot readily be understood or deciphered
  • Plans that may violate jail, federal, or state laws
  • Plans that outline exactly how contraband or drugs will be shipped into the jail

There are a couple of those, particularly the plans that could lead to the sender being prosecuted, so be sure to avoid breaking the rules.

Telephone

The Ada County jail does not permit inmates to receive incoming calls of any kind. They are assigned times where they can call out, though, but it is on a collect basis and can be incredibly expensive. The new video visitation system installed at the Ada County jail actually makes the telephone about as obsolete as mail now. If you have not heard about this new system, read on to the next section for more details.

Visitation

The Ada County jail has taken all of the hassle out of visiting the jail in person by implementing a video visitation system that does not even require you to visit the jail All you need is a computer with a high-speed internet connection, a webcam, microphone, and speakers, and you are ready to go. Inmates are allowed a pair of 25-minute video visitations per week for free, but they can also purchase more. Visitations can be planned up to 6 days in advance and are available from 9am to 9.30pm MST.
