About the Minnehaha County Jail

The concrete and glass front of the Minnehaha County Jail is easily recognized within the county. It is operated under the supervision of the Sheriff, and is focused on following all state and federal rules and regulations, protecting the safety and security of all staff and inmates who are present, and to ensure that inmates have access to their basic needs during the entirety of their incarceration.

The physical address of the Minnehaha County Jail is 305 W. 4th St. Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57104, and the jail can be reached by phone 24 hours a day by calling 605-367-4321. An online inmate listing is updated in real time, every 15 minutes.

Medical, dental, and mental health needs will all be cared for, and there are classes to assist those who are fighting addiction, who are learning to parent better, or who want to further their education. A recent addition that was completed in 2020 has added capacity to the jail, increasing it to almost 750 beds. The main main benefits of the new addition are a more efficient booking center, which even include showers for inmates to use before being assigned to the unit or cell, and a virtual courtroom so that inmates can have their hearings right in the jail by video. This saves on staffing, transport and the safety of inmates and the community. The new addition, with increased security measures, was built so that in the future, if needed, two more floors can be added in order to increase jail capacirty.

Each of the cell blocks has a day room with access to phones, tablets, and more. Each of the cells hold one or two inmates depending upon the housing needs of those who are housed there. Both male and female inmates are housed here, with all juvenile offenders being taken to the juvenile facility nearby. To fund the accounts of inmates there is an online access at jailatm.com or through the kiosk in the lobby, and the regular mail system has been upgraded to a digital program through NCIC.com that allows individuals to send notes, documents, photos, and more to inmates directly to their device for a cost of $0.25 - $0.35 per message or photo. Any mail that must be sent via the post office must be addressed to the inmate with their file ID, at Minnehaha County Jail, PO Box 591, Longview, Texas. To visit or receive calls from an inmate an account must be created at ncic.com. This will allow inmates to make both voice and video calls to their approved visitor lists, and the hours are 7:30-10:15am, 1-4pm, and 7-9:30 on all days except Monday within the lobby at the kiosk, or from online on the weekends during the same hours.

If you are a Minnehaha County sentenced inmate, you will be charged a $10.00 day fee for every day you are sentenced. If you are serving a sentence for another county you will not be charged $10.00/day by Minnehaha County. For deposits made on inmate accounts with a negative room and board balance from a previous sentenced stay, 50% of the deposit will be applied toward the negative balance and 50% will be applied to the inmate’s general account.

If you have any other questions, scroll down this page for information on posting bail for an offender, getting directions, the visitation schedule, how to send money, commissary and mail and get access to other jails in South Dakota. If you still need answers, call the jail at 605-367-4321.

Minnehaha County Jail Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Minnehaha County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Minnehaha County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Minnehaha County Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Minnehaha County and other South Dakota and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Minnehaha County Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Minnehaha County Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

Posting an Inmate's Bond in Minnehaha County

  • If you want to post bail for someone arrested and in jail in Minnehaha County, you need to call the Minnehaha County Jail at 605-367-4321 to get the exact amount.
  • You can look up an inmates bond online, but it's always best to call the jail to confirm.
  • Besides paying an inmate's bond with cash, you can use a company called Court Money to pay by credit card either at the {facility_name_1], or over the phone by calling 800-352-9870.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff also recommends that you consider using a bail bond agent licensed to do business in Minnehaha County.

  • You can pay a cash bond yourself, or use your home in Minnehaha County, or in some cases the state of South Dakota, but the benefit of using a bail bond agent is that they take responsibility for making sure the inmate shows up for court in Minnehaha County, and if they don't, then they take the financial responsibility.
  • The typical fee for a bond will be between 10-20% of the bail amount; usually 15%.  So if an offender has a bail of $10,000.00, their bond will be $1500.00.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Minnehaha County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Minnehaha County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Minnehaha County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
