About the Salt Lake County Metro Jail
Located within the city of Salt Lake, the Salt Lake County Metro Jail is operated by the local Sheriff and has a large staff of fully trained personnel. This facility is used for housing inmates from their first booking after arrest through to their release after they have served their entire sentence. Several programs are operating to assist in the rehabilitation of inmates in the hopes they will reduce recidivism rates and to ease the transition back into society after their release. These programs include education programs, vocational training, work experience in cooperation with community groups and systems to support life skills. Several programs are also available after use. The housing units in the facility are separated into classes based upon the security needs and the seriousness of the charges. There are three quarantine units for those who need to be separated from the general population, four pod units that have individual or double cells, and a holding unit where inmates are held until they have been classified and assigned to a unit. Two dormitory style units are also present where inmates are housed together in an open space with the dayroom, rather than cells positioned around the dayroom, which accommodate those with non-violent crimes. Each of the dormitories have 80 kitchen workers, GED unit has 64 inmates, and there are health pods and housing for mental health within that. Crisis intervention training is provided to all staff within the medical unit and each inmate is treated with respect and humanity at all times. There are three main ways that friends and family can communicate with inmates including via outgoing phone calls, email, and mail, in addition to visits. To communicate by phone there are phones located within each housing unit that are available from 7 am until 9:30 each night, and inmates can make 15 minute calls to those who are on their approved list and as long as they have funds on their account that is maintained through web.connectnetwork.com. Accounts can be created at OffenderConnect to send electronic messages to inmates that they are able to access during the day. Mail can also be sent through US Postal Service and will be checked for contraband before being passed to the inmate, with a full list of what is not allowed provide on the website for the jail. To visit an inmate all visitors must be on the approved visiting list and must follow the regulations including dressing appropriately and arriving a few minutes early to clear security. Visiting hours occur from 9am until 9pm with two visits being permitted each week per inmate, and each pod will have a day that they have visits. Visitors will remain 6 feet from inmates and some housing units require masks to be worn. To view the day of the pod visits the website slco.org has a full list of visitation rules and times.

Salt Lake County Metro Jail Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Salt Lake County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Salt Lake County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Salt Lake County and other Utah and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Salt Lake County Metro Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Salt Lake County Metro Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.
