About the Humboldt County Correctional Facility

The Humboldt County Correctional Facility in California has a rated capacity from the state of 417 beds, although if necessary, adding in medical beds and holding cells, the jail can house up to 441 inmates. It is considered a regional medium security jail that mainly houses pretrial detainees, tose who have been sentenced and are doing their time, and those who are awaiting transport to state prisons or being extradited to other facilities in the state. The five story Humboldt County Correctional Facility was built in 1996, replacing the old jail next door (built in 1946) that now houses the Humboldt County District Attorney's office. The jail, managed and staffed by the county sheriff's office, is known as the ugliest building in town, and rightfully so.

Since 2017 there have been plans to expand the jail, primarily for a Community Re-entry Facility, but politics and government wrangling (and lack of funds) has continuously gotten in the way, but in 2023 it was finally approved. The 28,500 square foot facility will house 44 low-level offenders and 20 additional staff, at an initial cost of $29 million.

The Humboldt County Correctional Facility can be contacted 24 hours a day by calling 707-441-5159. The facility, along with the county courthouse, is located in a one block area bordered by 4th and 5th Streets and I and J Avenues.  Inmates at the jail are assessed and classified before they are assigned to a housing unit. Most are housed in dormitories, however the most violent are kept apart and kept in cells. Unfortunately, the jail has no outside recreation area.

You can go online and look up to see in an inmate is in custody on the Humboldt County Daily Jail Reports, or you can search for an inmate on Vinelink Inmate Search. You can also call the jail at 707-441-5159 to get information about an inmate or any of the inmate services that you can't learn about on this page in the sections below. You can also look up whether you or someone else has an Arrest Warrant.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. You can also send them books, magazines and newspapers, but only directly from the publisher. Friends and family of inmates in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 707-441-5159.

How do I find out if someone has been arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility?

To find out if someone you know has been recently arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, call the jail’s booking line at 707-441-5159.

There may be an automated method of looking them up by their name over the phone, or you may be directed to speak to someone at the jail. Sometimes the jail staff may ask you the offender’s date of birth to ensure privacy of the offender’s status.

Keep in mind that after an arrest, the information on an offender may not be publicly available for several hours.

Humboldt County Correctional Facility Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Humboldt County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Humboldt County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Humboldt County and other California and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Humboldt County Correctional Facility will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Humboldt County Correctional Facility Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

Humboldt County Correctional Facility Bail and Bond Information

Two methods:

  1. CASH BAIL - Cash bail may be posted by anyone, including the inmate. Cash, traveler's checks, money orders, and certified checks in the exact amount of bail made out to "Humboldt Superior Court". Personal and business checks are not accepted.
  2. BAIL BOND - A bail bond executed by a licensed bail agent is the second method to bail a inmate out of the facility.
  • You can pay a cash bond yourself, or use your home in Humboldt County, or in some cases the state of California, but the benefit of using a bail bond agent is that they take responsibility for making sure the inmate shows up for court in Humboldt County, and if they don't, then they take the financial responsibility.
  • The typical fee for a bond will be between 10-20% of the bail amount; usually 15%.  So if an offender has a bail of $10,000.00, their bond will be $1500.00.

Call 707-441-5159 to find out the exact bond (plus other fees) amount, or look it up online by looking up the information on the Humboldt County inmate locator.
