Five Things to do Before Going to Federal Prison

Five Things to do Before Going to Federal Prison

You’ve been charged with a federal crime and it appears that you might do some time in a federal prison. Get organized before you go.
  1. Make lists of reading material. Most federal prisons allow you to receive magazines and books that are sent directly from the publishing house. Give your family lists of magazines, authors and specific book titles you are interested in reading. Right now, reading might be the last thing on your mind, but when boredom sets in after your sentence starts, you will be glad you did it. Pay for several magazine subscriptions ahead of time if you are being allowed to self-surrender to the prison.

  1. See the dentist and doctor. Federal prison will take care of your medical and dental needs, but not in a timely manner and certainly not as well as the services available to you now. Prison will be hard enough to endure without adding the excruciating pain of an abscessed tooth. Have your dentist take care of all cavities before you go.

  1. Save some book money. As a federal prisoner, you are typically allowed to have up to $500 on your books to buy personal hygiene items, snacks and other things off the commissary list. Save as much as you can so you know you will have what you need. Mail it to the federal processing address the day before you self-surrender.
  2. Read the handbook. If you know which prison you are being sent to, get online and read the handbook listed on the prison website.   Read and know the rules so you don’t end up in trouble for breaking rules you didn’t even know existed. \
  3. Gather contact information of friends and family. List everyone you know, even if you cannot imagine writing letters to them now. Once you are behind the walls, writing will become a favorite hobby.
Final thoughts: The thought of going to prison is stressful, but preparing before you get there will make your sentence easier to handle once you are there.
