In 2016, a Boston man was seen hitting a woman in a car on Route I-95 outside of Massachusetts. Two women were held captive in the car, and a nearby driver spotted the violence and called 911.
The Boston man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for sex trafficking the two women who were from Maine. This prosecution was a rare event given the prevalence of sex and labor trafficking in the state of Maine.
Maine is considered a “source state” for human trafficking victims, meaning some of the criminals who are Most Wanted by ICE, the FBI, and local agencies know it’s easier in Maine than in other states to locate, groom and exploit victims for illegal sex and unpaid labor.
Even when a victim escapes a trafficker in Maine, he or she (most commonly a white female between the ages of 14 and 30) will likely fall back into the hands of a predator.
A geographic area of exploitation may be known to law enforcement agencies, such as Neal Street in Portland, Maine, but the vicious cycle of exploitation involving drugs, sex and violence continues, mostly unabated. Maine legislators don’t seem to have the will to legislate needed changes, as of 2020.

Additional Information: On July 12 2009, at approximately 3am, a woman in her mid 20s was walking alone and talking on her cell phone on Squirrel Street in Banff, Alberta. She was approached from behind by a male who tapped her on the shoulder. The male smashed her cell phone and suddenly threw her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. She screamed and fought back, scratching at the man’s face and gouging his eyes. He punched her four times in the face and head before running away. The victim had no prior contact with this male before he grabbed her. The victim was treated in hospital for minor physical injuries. A sketch-artist drew two composite sketches of the suspect with the assistance of the victim and a witness who saw a man running away from the scene. Banff Royal Canadian Mounted Police is requesting the public's assistance in identifying an individual who may resemble the composite sketches, particularly if that individual is known to have been in or near Banff previously. It severely disrupted a cell of Colombian based traffickers, three of whom have already pleaded guilty. Kratc-Usman was a high ranking representative of a cocaine organization in South America. He was in Canada to evaluate the Canadian operation and gave the final approval before the traffickers attempted to smuggle in the cocaine. The RCMP consider Kratc-Usman to be among the very upper echelon of international cocaine traffickers.
