Visiting an Inmate in the LA County Jail - Pitchess Detention Center North in California

Visitation is an important time for inmates, their families, and their friends. Though the sessions are not long, they are important. However, when it comes to visiting the facility that houses 1500 inmates it can be quite a scary experience. If you’ve never been involved with incarceration facility before the process of visitation can become quite overwhelming.

The Los Angeles County jail system has embraced a completely new visitation methodology trying to ease the burden for families and friends, staff, and the facility itself. Will walk you through the requirements and guidelines below along with giving you suggestions and recommendations on how to make your visitation as enjoyable as possible.
Visitation occurs every weekend. There are no weekday visits allowed for the general public other than special holidays. These holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, and July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

On visitation days the hours are from 8 AM to 2 PM. If the holidays fall on the weekend, it is considered a regular visitation day. If the holiday falls on a weekday, this will add an additional visitation day to the week.

Inmates are allowed one hour of visitation each weekend. This can be divided into two 30 minute visits on one day or one 30 minute visit on each of two days. There is no more than one hour allowed per weekend and each visit is 30 minutes max.

Visitation occurs at the Dr. Elmer T. Jaffe visiting center located at 29300 The Old Road, Castaic, CA 91384. The visiting center phone number is (661) 295 – 8074 in case you have any problems or questions.

The online visitation scheduling system is the preferred way for visitations to reschedule however, walk-ins are still allowed. The disadvantage to walk-in visits is the waiting line is longer and it takes longer to coordinate the inmate because the visit was not anticipated.

Using the Inmate Visitation Scheduling System for Pitchess Detention Center North

PDC North first began using the LA County Jail system online visitation scheduling system at the end of 2012. This allows visitors to go online and schedule your appointment time with the inmate. The computer will not allow you to schedule visits at any period of time in the inmate is not available. This makes scheduling of visitation appointments much cleaner and simpler for friends, family, and the facility.

When you first start using the online scheduling system you’ll have to register. Registration requires an email address. It’s easier if you have access to a computer, but if you do not you can register at a kiosk in one of the participating facilities.

Registration simply requires you to enter your email address and then confirm. You will receive a validation email and a temporary password to enter into the registration system.

Following a successful registration you will be able to enter the online scheduling system and select your appointment time to visit your inmate. If the inmate has an open time available for visitation, you will see those open slots and can select the one that best fits your schedule.

There is a help desk available Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM if you have any problems or questions with the online scheduling system.

Cancellation of Scheduled Appointments

If you must cancel a scheduled appointment for some reason, it is important to let the system know as soon as possible. Someone else may be able to visit the inmate in your place and the cancellation won’t be counted against the inmate’s weekly quota.

If for any reason the facility must cancel your visitation, you will be notified prior to the day of the visitation. Possible reasons for canceling your visit would be if the inmate was moved, released, visitation stations availability changed, visitation schedules actually changed, or the inmate was placed under some type of restrictions. Again, if the facility cancels your visit this will not be counted against the inmate’s weekly quota.
