Bernalillo Co. Metropolitan Detention Visiting Hours, Schedule and Instructions


Step 1

Arrive at the jail 10 minutes before wish to visit.

Step 2

Be sure to dress conservatively and appropriately or you will not be allowed to visit.

Step 3

Show a valid, government-issued photo ID.



Who Can Visit an Inmate in Bernalillo Co. Metropolitan Detention

Anyone over the age of 18, who can show a valid ID may visit an inmate.

Children under age 18 must be accompanied by the parent or legal guardian.

If you and the inmate are under a court order to have no contact with each other, your visit will be denied. If it is not discovered by staff, you and the inmate or both could face later legal issues for violating the order.

The Bernalillo Co. Metropolitan Detention reserves the right to deny any person the right to enter the jail it chooses and for any reason.

Morning Session is held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Evening Session is held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Visitation only has a capacity for 150 visitors. If it is full when you arrive, you will have to wait to visit or be turned away if it is too late in the session. This makes it important to arrive as early as possible for the chosen time frame.

Inmates may have up to two visits per week but cannot have any visits until they have been in custody at least 72 hours.

The Bernalillo Co. Metropolitan Detention staff will turn anyone away who is not dressed appropriately for a visit.

The best way to be sure the visit takes place is to dress as if you are meeting someone's grandmother for the first time. 

Wear clothes that are not revealing.

Don't wear see-through material.

Have all undergarments covered (males and females) and avoid a lot of cleavage.

Shorts and skirts should reach mid-thigh.

Sleeves should be at least half-way to your elbow.

The following types of clothing are also prohibited:

Clothing promoting gang affiliation.

Anything displaying drugs, weapons or profanity.

Clothing depicting anything obscene.

Bernalillo Co. Metropolitan Detention Visitation Tips, Rules and Guidelines

Jail visits are conducted on a televised screen from another location.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and guardians must provide proof of their guardianship.

Leave all personal belongings, except for your state ID in your vehicle.

Children must be monitored at all times or jail staff will end the visit early.

Do not attempt to use a cell phone during a visit or your visit will be terminated and your future visits could be jeopardized.

Many jails are implementing video visits. These visits are conducted via the Internet on computers, IPADS and Smart phones.

Video visits allow the visit to take place in the privacy of your own home. Some family members 'take their inmate with them' to church, the park, the doctor or anywhere else simply by signing in and bringing the device along.
