Step 1

Be sure you have an acceptable form of identification. This facility recognizes:

Current, valid, driver’s license from any state

A non-driver, state-issued photo identification from any state

Resident alien or permanent resident card issued by the U.S. Department of Justice

Passport (from any country)

NYS benefits identification card (Medicaid/food stamp photo ID)

U.S. Armed Services identification

Consulate-issued or diplomatic identification

Step 2

Everyone 16-years-old and older must present an acceptable form of ID before being allowed to visit an inmate.

Those who are under the age of 16 and accompanied by a parent or guardian do not need to show ID to visit an inmate.

Step 3

16-17 year old parents can bring children to visit an inmate as long as:

The 16/17 year old has an acceptable form of ID

Both the 16/17 year old and the inmate must be the legally recognized parents of the child

The child’s birth certificate must be shown before the visit is permitted.

Step 5

Arrive at the facility 20-30 minutes before your visit.

Who Can Visit an Inmate in Elmhurst Hospital Prison Ward

In general, anyone 16-years-old or older who can produce a valid government-issued photo ID, can be approved to visit an inmate in this jail, with the following exceptions:

You are on felony parole or probation.

You are on house arrest.

You have open criminal charges for which you are out on bond awaiting court dates.

You have a warrant for your arrest.

There is an order of protection is in place between you and the inmate regardless of which party has the order.

Your government-issued photo ID is illegally altered.

Note: When you register to visit, your ID will be run through a nationwide system and it will alert the staff of any warrants, probation statuses or orders of protections you might have. If there are warrants you will be arrested. If you are on felony probation you will not be allowed to visit.

Elmhurst Hospital Prison Ward does not require visitors to fill out an application and wait for approval, but you will register to visit and allow staff members to run your ID through a nationwide warrant/probation status system.

Visits are one hour long. You can only visit once on each allowable visitation day.

Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Friday-Saturday-Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The staff strongly recommends you use public transportation to get to Rikers Island as public parking is very limited.

The Elmhurst Hospital Prison Ward staff will turn anyone away who is not dressed appropriately for a visit.

The best way to be sure the visit takes place is to dress as if you are meeting someone's grandmother for the first time. 

Wear clothes that are not revealing.

Don't wear see-through material.

Have all undergarments covered (males and females) and avoid a lot of cleavage.

Shorts and skirts should reach mid-thigh.

Sleeves should be at least half-way to your elbow.

Clothing that has a hole/rip that is more than three inches above your knee cannot be worn

You cannot wear clothing that has a hood.

Hats are prohibited. Religious head coverings are the only head coverings allowed.

Clothing identifying a specific gang by name or logo

Clothing that makes explicit reference to obscene language, drugs, sex or violence

No swimming attire is allowed.

If you can see through it, don’t wear it to the visit.


Jewelry (excluding a wedding ring and one religious medal no more than two inches in diameter hung on chain of one quarter-inch or less in diameter and no longer than 24 inches

Tops, including dresses, which expose the chest, stomach or back are prohibited.

Shorts, skirts or dresses the hem of which is more than three inches above the knee

Spandex leggings unless covered by tops, shorts, skirts or dresses the hem of which is no more than three inches above the knee

Outer garments including coats, shawls, ponchos, jackets, vests, gloves, or over-boots or overshoes (outer boots or shoes that slip over other shoes)

Visitors must wear undergarments.

Jail visits are in person and you are typically allowed one brief hug at the start and end of the visit. Attempting more than this will get the visit terminated.
