Following these instructions exactly will enhance your chances of getting official approval to visit an inmate.

It is highly recommended that prior to an inmate visit you call the jail at 914-231-1400 to confirm that visits have not been cancelled.

Westchester County Penitentiary Visiting Hours, Schedule and Instructions


Step 1

Arrive early enough to be able to find parking, get past the first gate and then walk to the jail lobby.

Step 2

Sign in to visit.

Step 3

Show a valid, government-issued photo ID.

Step 4

If requested, show a valid, certified copy of a birth certificate for each minor child you are bringing to visit.



Who Can Visit an Inmate in Westchester County Penitentiary

Anyone over the age of 18, and can produce a valid government-issued photo ID can be approved to visit an inmate in this jail.

Jails limit the number of people that can visit an inmate to two adults and two minor children each visit.

Children under age 18 must be accompanied by the parent or legal guardian.

If you are a co-defendant with the inmate in a pending case, your visit will be denied.

If you and the inmate are under a court order to have no contact with each other, your visit will be denied.

The Westchester County Penitentiary reserves the right to deny any person the right to enter the jail it chooses and for any reason.



Westchester County Penitentiary Visitation Application Process

Westchester County Penitentiary does not require visitors to fill out an application. There will be periodic database searches of visitor ID’s to check for active warrants. If you have an active warrant and it is discovered, you will be arrested at the jail.



Visiting Hours in Westchester County Penitentiary

Visitation is based on the first letter of the inmate’s last name. 

Weekdays

Monday: A-C      

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday: D-G    

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday: H-L

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thursday: M-R

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Friday: S-Z

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

NOTE: All individuals wishing to visit on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays must be in the jail lobby by 11:15 a.m. for the morning session and 3:15 p.m. for the afternoon session to allow time for processing.

Individuals arriving after 11:15 will not be permitted a morning session visit and after 3:15 p.m., will not be permitted an afternoon session.

Weekends

Saturday:

A-D – 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

E-L – 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sunday

M-R- 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.                      

S-Z- 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Each inmate is allowed up to two visits per week, only one can be a weekend day. The visits are an hour long. The same person may visit both times each week if desired.

If you are visiting from another state or traveling a great distance, Westchester County Penitentiary may allow you an extended visitation. Call 914-231-1400 to ask for special consideration.

Westchester County Penitentiary Visitation Dress Code

The Westchester County Penitentiary staff will turn anyone away who is not dressed appropriately for a visit.

The best way to be sure the visit takes place is to dress as if you are meeting someone's grandmother for the first time. 

You must remove all jewelry before the visit.

Orange clothing is prohibited anywhere on the jail property including the visitation area.

Outerwear is prohibited including coats, hoodies, outer-sweatshirts.

No hats, headbands, scarves metal hair pins or bandanas.  Exception: religious headwear may be worn but must be removed for security inspection prior to entering the visiting room.

You cannot wear clothes that have holes torn in them, including those that are manufactured that way. (Ripped jeans, etc.).

Wear clothes that are not revealing.

Don't wear see-through material.

Have all undergarments covered (males and females) and avoid a lot of cleavage.

Shorts and skirts should reach mid-thigh.

Sleeves should be at least half-way to your elbow.

The following types of clothing are also prohibited:

Clothing promoting gang affiliation.

Anything displaying drugs, weapons or profanity.

Clothing depicting anything obscene.

Westchester County Penitentiary Visitation Tips, Rules and Guidelines

Jail visits are conducted in person behind plexi-glass.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and guardians must provide proof of their guardianship or a certified birth certificate.

Leave all personal belongings, except for your state ID in your vehicle.

Children must be monitored at all times or jail staff will end the visit early.

Leave home early enough to find a parking place and get past the gate and into the jail lobby.

'At Home' Video Visitation

Many jails are implementing video visits. These visits are conducted via the Internet on computers, IPADS and Smart phones.

This jail contracts with Securus to provide families and friends the ability to have “at-home” visits with their inmates. You must open a free account and if you wish to have the visits, you must pay for them.

Video visits allow the visit to take place in the privacy of your own home. Some family members 'take their inmate with them' to church, the park, the doctor or anywhere else simply by signing in and bringing the device along.

Video visits save you from having to get your children ready, drive to the jail, wait in long lines and go through security checkpoints just to see the inmate.

TIP:

Participation in video-visitation is a privilege, not a right. Both visitor and inmate are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate fashion at all times during a video visit.

 The WESTCHESTER COUNTY DEPT OF CORRECTIONS reserves the right to deny, cancel or terminate a video visit prior to or during a video session based upon visitor or resident inmate misconduct. The

WESTCHESTER COUNTY DEPT OF CORRECTIONS also reserves the right to restrict visitor from participating in all future use of the system. 

All family member/friend video visits are recorded and subject to electronic monitoring by the WESTCHESTER COUNTY DEPT OF CORRECTIONS personnel. Your use of this video visitation system constitutes consent to this recording and monitoring.

 Tight fitting or provocative clothing is prohibited.
