About the Fayette County Jail

In November of 2023 the new Fayette County Jail on a six acre site on McClellandtown Road in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, will finally be opening its doors to inmates. The new jail, under construction since 2021 and under discussion for over 20 years, will have enough beds for 330 inmates.  The four-story (two floors with two mezzanines), 114,500 square foot facility, built at a cost to the county of $40 million, will be replacing the Fayette County Prison, also known as "The Rock", which was built in 1892, and is in a complete state of deterioration.

The Fayette County Prison, located at 12 Court Street in Uniontown is a beautiful building from the outside, but inside, it is not fit for humans. You can reach them 24 hours a day by calling 724-430-1222.

Here are a few photos to give you an idea of the conditions.

OLD (CURRENT) FAYETTE COUNTY PRISON

The new 140,500 square foot, 330-bed 'Fayette County Jail', as it will be called, is a modern correctional facility with the ability to expand to 462 beds should the need arise in the future. It is located about one mile from the courthouse, making transporting inmates to and from court, workable.

The Fayette County Jail has five “pods” in the jail; one for women, three for men, and one for “restrictive housing” for solitary needs.

The jail can house approximately 66 inmates in each of the pods . The pods include individual cells, a center social area, recreation room, medical room, and showers.

Here are a few images of the 'new' jail:

NEW FAYETTE COUNTY JAIL

Fayette County is a welcoming county with a rich history and historical buildings that offer a look into the past. To house any offenders who are charged and awaiting their court appearance as well as those who have been convicted and sentenced, the Fayette County Prison was built on Court Street in Uniontown, PA. The facility offers all needed care, including food, medical care as needed, clothing, and meals. Inmates may keep a set of clothing with personal property for any court dates that they have. Mail must be properly addressed and contain no gift cards, contraband, or restricted topics. Inmates may only have 10 photographs at a time, and they must be only within the restrictions provided.

An Inspire Tablet Program is also in place at this facility, allowing each inmate to have access to a tablet to use for messaging, receiving images, and communicating with loved ones who are outside of the prison. As this facility also has young inmates who may not have finished school, educational services are provided for them through the school system, and GED tests are provided for anyone who is looking to obtain their GED. Other educational opportunities are provided to improve life skills and employability after release at the end of the sentence being served.

For those wishing to receive visitors, a list must be made of all the people they are willing to accept visits from, and these will be approved by the jail staff. Visiting hours are maintained from 6:30pm to 9:30pm with each visit being half an hour long. Days are chosen by the last name of the inmate, with A through F having visits on Sunday, G through L on Monday, M through R on Tuesday, and S through Z on Saturday.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. Friends and family of inmates in the Fayette County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 724-430-1222.

Recent Bookings & Arrests

How do I find out if someone has been arrested and booked into the Fayette County Jail?

To find out if someone you know has been recently arrested and booked into the Fayette County Jail, call the jail’s booking line at 724-430-1222.

There may be an automated method of looking them up by their name over the phone, or you may be directed to speak to someone at the jail. Sometimes the jail staff may ask you the offender’s date of birth to ensure privacy of the offender’s status.

Keep in mind that after an arrest, the information on an offender may not be publicly available for several hours.

If you don’t want to check up on an offender by calling the jail, you can also try looking up people recently booked online.

Fayette County Jail Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Fayette County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Fayette County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Fayette County Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Fayette County and other Pennsylvania and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Fayette County Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Fayette County Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

Posting Bond for an inmate in the Fayette County Jail

724-430-1222

  • First, you must call the jail to find out the exact amount of the inmate's bond.
  • To post a Monetary Bond, either all cash or a percentage in cash, you must appear in the Clerk of Courts Office (724-430-1253) in person, no later than 3:30pm.
    61 E Main St # 1A
    Uniontown, PA 15401
  • Bring a valid drivers license or state issued photo identification, along with the proper amount of cash, or a certified check, cashier's check, or money order.
  • Bond cannot be posted online or over the telephone. Credit cards are not accepted for bond.
  • You can also post bond at the Fayette County Prison AFTER 4:00pm on business days and on weekends and holidays. You have to have a money order for the proper amount, as the Fayette County Jail does not accept cash, credit cards, cashier's checks or personal checks.

The Fayette County Sheriff recommends that you also consider using a bail bond agent licensed to do business in Fayette County.

  • You can pay a cash bond yourself, or use your home in Fayette County, or in some cases the state of Pennsylvania, but the benefit of using a bail bond agent is that they take responsibility for making sure the inmate shows up for court in Fayette County, and if they don't, then they take the financial responsibility.
  • The typical fee for a bond will be between 10-20% of the bail amount; usually 15%.  So if an offender has a bail of $10,000.00, their bond will be $1500.00.

Call 724-430-1222 to find out the exact bond (plus other fees) amount, or look it up online by looking up the information on the Fayette County inmate locator.
