Step 1

The inmate must schedule a visit and let you know when to come to the jail.

Step 2

Arrive no later than 15 minutes past visitation time or your visit will be denied. No exceptions.

Step 3
Show a valid, government-issued photo ID.


Who Can Visit an Inmate in Dane County William H. Ferris Center Jail

Anyone 18 and older, who the inmate has scheduled for a visit and can show proper ID may visit an inmate.

Children must be accompanied by an adult who is scheduled for a visit.

If you are on probation or parole it is important to get permission from your supervising officer to visit an inmate before your first visit. Not doing so could violate your terms of supervision and you could end up arrested. Probation/parole officers often scan through past visitation sign in sheets at the jail to see if anyone they supervise came to visit an inmate without permission.

The Dane County William H. Ferris Center Jail staff will turn anyone away who is not dressed appropriately for a visit.

The best way to be sure the visit takes place is to dress as if you are meeting someone's grandmother for the first time. 

Children must be dressed and cannot be in just a diaper.

Wear clothes that are not revealing.

Don't wear see-through material.

Have all undergarments covered (males and females) and avoid a lot of cleavage.

Shorts and skirts should reach mid-thigh.

Sleeves should be at least half-way to your elbow.

The following types of clothing are also prohibited:

Clothing promoting gang affiliation.

Anything displaying drugs, weapons or profanity.

Clothing depicting anything obscene.

Jail visits are conducted in person behind plexi-glass or in person depending on if the inmate has contact or no-contact visitation privileges.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and guardians must provide proof of their guardianship.

Leave all personal belongings, except for your state ID in your vehicle or in a locker (if one is provided).

Children must be monitored at all times or jail staff will end the visit early.
