The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Friday one of its employees had been charged and fired for helping inmates retrieve contraband during litter sweeps.
According to a statement from SCDC Spokeswoman Chrysti Shain, Lloyd Ray Franklin, 76, of 210 Waxberry Ct in Boiling Springs, was charged Thursday with providing contraband to inmates of Spartanburg’s Livesay Correctional Institution.
Shain said Franklin, a transportation driver assigned to the litter crew at Livesay, is accused of taking inmates to spots along Interstate 85 to retrieve contraband left for them. Warrants indicate the incident occurred on Thursday.
He was fired after his arrest, and remains in custody.
Located on Broadcast Drive, Livesay Correctional Institution is listed as a Level 1 minimum security facility serving non-violent inmates with relatively short sentences, or who are within 36 months of release.
