Headed to Prison and Scared: How Will I Keep Myself Safe?

It’s down to the wire. Your attorney has advised you to take the deal and it comes with a prison sentence. If you have never been to prison before, the thought can be paralyzing. You’ve seen movies that show how violent and dangerous prison can be. Movies are not real life. Knowing a few good tips before you get to prison will help you get along. Don’t borrow: One of the biggest problems new inmates have is that they get into debt to other inmates. It’s probably going to be a couple of weeks before your commissary starts up and it can be tempting to borrow snacks or other commissary items from current inmates. Don’t do it. For the entire time you are there, you should avoid getting into debt for commissary, gambling or anything else.  Develop the no-debt habit from day one. Don’t gossip:  The only outcomes will be negative. If an inmate hears you have been talking about him, it sets the stage for bad blood and problems. Conversing is fine, but don’t take part in gossiping about other inmates. Don’t ask, don’t tell: When it comes to charges, prison etiquette dictates that you don’t ask anyone why they are there. Conversely, if you are asked, you don’t have to discuss it. This is a universal rule in prisons across the nation. But do keep in mind that if you refuse to discuss your charges, you can look as if you have something to hide, and this can present its own problems, especially with the more aggressive “alpha male” types who are locked up with you. Stay out of it: While on the outside, you were always taught to stick up for the underdog and step in to stop someone from being bullied.  In prison it is the opposite. Stay out of it. If two people are fighting, stay back. If an inmate is threatening another, don’t get involved. Let the guards handle it and you mind your business. It is the best way to not make enemies. Final thoughts: Going to prison won’t be a picnic. It will be loud, the food won’t be great and you will miss your family. But if you avoid getting into debt, keep cool, don’t gossip and stay out of problems that arise between others, you should get through your time just fine. Related: Jail and Prison Myths and Truths.
