⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe Strafford County House of Corrections is an 89,000 square foot, two-story, concrete and steel jail that was built in 2004 at a cost of $25 million. It has a rated capacity of 392 beds. There was a lot of debate surrounding spending this much money for a jail in a county of 125,000 people (at the time), especially when they could have just expanded the existing one for one-fourth of the cost of the new one.
However, the expense paid off, as the revenue the Strafford County House of Corrections takes in every year from ICE detainees and from neighboring counties that don't have the capacity, has paid back the cost of the jail many times over, and made it a net earner for the county.
The old jail was built in 1985 and had a capacity of 65 inmates. It was supposed to last 20 years, but with five years was already exceeding its capacity by 40%. That's why this time around, the decision was made to 'build it and they will come'.
