It is located within the Public Safety Building that also holds the sheriff office and other law enforcement related agencies. Using a direct supervision model to maintain order within the jail has officers working within the housing units directly and interacting with inmates. There are seven housing units in this location and a total capacity of 262 offenders who are either pretrial or waiting for their sentencing. Holding both male and female inmates, there are 6 housing units for adult males and 1 for females, and 48 of the spaces are for medium security and designed as a dormitory setting. This facility runs both a community work program that allows inmates to complete tasks in the community to assist nonprofits or other groups to maintain their spaces and finish community projects, and a garden that provides produce to the jail itself and to the local food bank.
Visitation: Visits are permitted on Saturday and Sundy and must be scheduled in advance at least one full day. All visitors must be approved before they are permitted to visit and will be emailed a time if they have been approved. Visit times depend upon the housing until and beginning at 7:45am and end by 10:45pm.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail also uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.
Books
The Steuben County Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
