Maintaining a therapeutic environment, the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center offers safe and secure housing for juveniles who have upcoming court dates. It operates several programs that are created to support education, learn and develop strengths of each youth, develop skills, encourage positive self-image and confidence, and offer opportunities for growth, along with keeping the community and the residents safe. Core values are focused on, and include respect, effective communication, promote change, address trauma, take responsibility, use opportunities to do your best, offer support to all of the residents, and to remain professional. As staff provide a good example of treating others will respect and positive interactions, the residents will also learn then skills and develop positive interactions among themselves. Programs within the facility are intended to reduce recidivism and provide tools for future success. Each resident is approached through a trauma informed approach, working towards healing the trauma and providing methods that can be used again in the future by any of the residents. Educational opportunities are provided in addition to core classes and high school credits, and all of the families will work with a youth engagement specialist to help with the transition back to the community. Several community partners are involved in providing information, encouragement, and programs for the residents.
