Inmates get their mail when the guards decide to give it out... usually after lunch at the Wayne County Jails.

I would like to send a letter to my nephew who is in jail in Detroit. Is the booking number the same thing as the inmate number? Do I just send it to the jail address with his name and inmate number on it? Will be he allowed to write me back? Are we allowed to send books or reading material, or just letters only? What happens if they move him from where he is now, to another place? Will any letters/books that I send him be sent back to me, or will the jail system find him and forward them on? This is all new to me so any help you could provide would greatly appreciated.

Click on the County Jail Inmate List or the County Jail Inmate Search links on the top left of this page (orange color). Accept the Disclaimer and you will come to the search page. Type in the inmate's first and last name and click search. When his name comes up the inmate number will be there.

And yes, the booking number and inmate number are the same. Yes, send letters with address, his name and inmate number. Fill out the return address fully if you want it to get delivered. You can send letters and only magazines or books direct from a publisher or major store like Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. If you ship stuff in direct you may never get it back. He can purchase supplies in jail if you put money on his account.

When you send an inmate a money order does the inmate deposit the money or does the jail admin do it for him?

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a peer counseling program? I'm looking for someone that has been through a similar situation as my brother, who might be able to provide him some support/encouragement while he is in jail.
