About the Genesee County Jail

Within Genesee County the Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the care of inmates and the operation of the Genesee County Jail.

Inmates here, male only, have been arrested or tried for felony or misdemeanor charges and are either waiting for their trial, have been committed for their own safety or that of others, are a witness requiring protection, or those sentenced to imprisonment.

While the original Genesee County Jail was built in 1903, upgrades have improved the security systems as well as increasing the capacity to 87 inmates, both males and females, in several different housing units.

Meals are cooked onsite and served fresh, medical care providers are available daily, and corrections officers are present around the clock to provide safety and security for both inmates and staff, as well as the community.

GED and other educational programming is offered, along with transition counseling, re-entry programs with job support and housing assistance, and many other programs that will assist inmates in creating a successful life after relief.

Visitors may attend their planned visit Monday-Thursday 1pm-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 1pm-6pm, or Sunday 4pm-6pm. Schedule visits by calling the facility at 585-343-0838 24 hours or more before your preferred visiting time.

Phones are available from 7am until 11pm every day to allow for outgoing calls, which are available for registration online.

Can you drop off anything for your inmate?

Yes.

  • Up to five (5) photographs.  NOTE: Polaroids are NOT acceptable.
  • Up to three (3) magazines.  Adult magazines are accepted, however, content should be limited to non-penetration photography.
  • Up to three (3) paperback books.
  • Two (2) newspapers daily.
  • Money.  Inmates are allowed to purchase food items, cosmetics and other items weekly from our commissary, up to $80 per week.  Commissary orders are placed Sunday morning and delivered Monday or Tuesday, ex holiday changes.  Cash can be left with the control room officer and will be deposited in the inmate's account.  Please maintain copies of your receipts.
  • Three (3) white pair of underwear, socks, or t-shirts (must be NEW, in an unopened retail package).
  • One (1) thermal undershirt (must be white, off white, and in an unopened retail package)

All acceptable property that is dropped off should have the inmate's name clearly written on it.  For publications, the name should be on the outer cover or, if necessary, on the inside front page.  Photos should be marked on the back.

Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Genesee County Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Genesee County Jail standards will be disposed of.
