Colbert County Jail

The 62-bed Colbert County Jail answers calls about inmates 24 hours a day at 256-383-0741.

All misdemeanor and felony arrests in this county end up here for booking and processing. From there, an inmate may be released on bond, released on their own recognizance, or held until the outcome of their trial, depending on the charges.

Sentences shorter than one year are served locally. Sentences of a year or more are served in the Alabama State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Here you can learn how to search the jail roster, get directions to the facility, and use inmate services such as visitation, inmate account deposits, mail, phone calls, voicemail, email and text messages, tablets, bail bonds, and commissary.

Before you send anything, get the inmate’s booking number or jail ID. If it doesn’t show up online, the staff at Colbert County Jail can give it to you at 256-383-0741.

The Colbert County Jail has a licensed capacity of 62 inmates, yet it is often forced to house many more, especially over the weekend. Most city and county jails see at least 40% of their inmates turn over monthly, another 30% every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% remain between six and twelve months. Stays of more than a year usually involve serious charges such as rape or murder, and because preparing those cases for trial takes time, offenders arrested in Colbert County can remain in the Colbert County facility far longer.

Approximately 2,120 offenders are arrested and detained by Colbert County law enforcement agencies every year.

The Colbert County Jail houses only the male inmates from Colbert County, while female inmates are housed at the Tuscumbia City Jail.

The Colbert County Jail at 107 W. 4th Street in downtown Tuscumbia has been the county’s jail since 1962, when it opened with room for 62 prisoners. The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Eric Balentine runs it, and it houses men only. Women arrested in the county are held at the Tuscumbia City Jail, (256) 386-3121. For jail and bond questions call (256) 386-8551. The sheriff’s non-emergency line is (256) 383-0741, and the main office is at 201 North Main Street, open weekdays 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Men brought to the county jail are booked on arrival, and Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires that they see a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Colbert is the only county in the Thirty-first Judicial Circuit. Case records are on Alacourt at v2.alacourt.com, and the sheriff keeps a Most Wanted page at colbertsheriff.net. If you think you’re wanted, talk with the sheriff’s office or a defense lawyer before you turn yourself in.

Colbert County accepts bonds Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., in three ways. For a cash bond, the paperwork is prepared at the jail and taken to the circuit clerk. A property bond needs a property assessment showing a value at least equal to the bond. The third option is a licensed bail bond company; the sheriff lists six local companies on its jail page. Every bond also carries a $35 filing fee, paid by money order to the Colbert County Circuit Clerk within three working days. Before any of that, the judge decides the terms of release: personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond. Rule 7.2 recommends amounts such as $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony and $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, but judges aren’t bound by it. Alabama guarantees bail in most cases. Exceptions include capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Aniah’s Law (2022) also permits denial after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. In May 2026, voters approved Amendment 1 with 81.6% support, adding solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle.

Call (256) 386-8551 before you plan a visit to confirm what visiting is currently allowed. The jail’s own page says it isn’t letting unauthorized people into the facility and isn’t accepting clothing drop-offs. Because drop-offs aren’t accepted, clothing has to be mailed new and unopened to the inmate at 107 W. 4th St., Tuscumbia, AL 35674. The limit is three each of white socks, white underwear, white T-shirts, white towels and white washcloths. No public bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive. For gas, Happy’s Chevron is at 1400 S Woodmont Dr and Tuscumbia Texaco is at 1021 US-72. For food, Sparky’s Drive Inn is at 701 Old Lee Hwy and Hardee’s is at 419 US-43.

Use the roster at colbertsheriff.net/roster-choose to confirm who is in custody. Personal mail goes to JailATM.com–Colbert County Jail, inmate name and number, 1605 Beltline Rd SW D8 #244, Decatur, AL 35601. Legal mail goes to the jail’s Tuscumbia address. Legacy Commissary Services runs commissary. Orders go in on Thursdays and are delivered on Fridays, and the menu includes snacks, drinks, hygiene items, stamped envelopes and some clothing. You can add money at jailatm.com or at the lobby kiosk with cash or a card. Money orders sent by mail are held for 10 days. Inmate phones are provided by CPC (Combined Public Communications). You can fund an account at cpcjail.com or at the lobby kiosk, 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. daily.

Understanding the booking process at Colbert County Jail

After an arrest, individuals are taken to Colbert County Jail where they go through booking. This process includes identifying the person, reviewing charges, and determining whether they will be released on their own, eligible for bail, or detained until their court date.

It’s crucial to remain silent after being arrested. Anything said may be used in court, so it’s better to refrain from speaking until consulting with an attorney.

The following steps outline the booking procedure at Colbert County Jail:

  • Personal identification verification.
  • Taking photographs (mugshots).
  • Medical and mental health assessment, as well as inquiries about substance use.
  • Possibly collecting DNA samples.
  • Performing a full-body search.
  • Seizing personal belongings for safekeeping.
  • Allowing one phone call.

Booking can take from a short hour to longer periods, especially on busy nights or with uncooperative individuals. For inquiries about posting bond for an arrestee, call the facility at 256-383-0741.

Paying bail for someone in custody in Colbert County

Once someone is booked at Colbert County Jail in Tuscumbia after an arrest, there are several outcomes:

1. They may be released without paying bail, agreeing to show up on a scheduled date.
2. They may remain in custody until their court appearance.
3. They can pay a bail or bond for release. Call 256-383-0741 for bail details.

Bail payments can take several forms.

  • The full cash bond is paid at the jail's bonding window or at the clerk of court using cash, a cashier's check or a money order, while many jails add a card option at a lobby kiosk or through an online bond service for a fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and call the jail at 256-383-0741 with questions.
  • A licensed bail bond agent in Colbert County can help cover bail.
  • Many courts take real estate as security for a bond; the property owner must show clear title plus equity at least equal to the bond, often twice it, backed by a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set the bail gives final approval.

For detailed information about the bail process in Colbert County, Alabama, see the Colbert County Jail Bail FAQ.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Colbert County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Colbert County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Colbert County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
