About the Limestone County Jail

The Limestone County Jail in Athens, also called the Limestone County Detention Facility, is run by the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin. The Sheriff’s Office and jail are at 101 West Elm Street, Athens, AL 35611. For jail questions, call the non-emergency line at (256) 232-0111, which is answered 24 hours a day. The main office line is (256) 233-6400, and it is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The jail opened in 2004 as a 42,000-square-foot building and gained another 10,850 square feet in 2005. It now has 336 beds. It is a medium-security jail with separate housing for men and women. It holds people arrested on misdemeanor and felony charges and people serving sentences of less than a year.

The official inmate search is at limestone-al-911.zuercherportal.com. After arrest, the person must appear before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours (Rule 4.3). Limestone County is part of the 39th Judicial Circuit, and Alacourt shows charges and court dates. If you need to deal with a warrant, call the Sheriff’s Office or an attorney before you turn yourself in.

Bonds can be paid with cash, a money order, or a credit card, posted through a licensed bail bondsman, or secured with real estate. The jail can tell you the amount at (256) 232-0111. Alabama’s Constitution protects the right to bail in most cases. Judges may deny it in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great, and, after a pretrial detention hearing, for the Aniah’s Law (2022) charges. Those are murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1, approved by 81.6% of voters in May 2026, added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2 recommends $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, but judges can set bail outside those ranges. A person may also be released on personal recognizance or an unsecured appearance bond.

Visits are by video through Inmate Sales (Combined Public Communications). On-site video visits at the jail are free and last 25 minutes. They run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no weekend on-site visits. Each person gets one on-site visit a week, with up to three visitors. Bring a state or government-issued photo ID, and keep children with you at all times. Low-cut tops, tank tops, short skirts or dresses, tight shorts, and hats aren’t allowed, and shoes and shirts are required. Remote video visits cost $0.20 a minute and are available daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., limited to one a day. No public bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive. Athens Food Mart at 210 W Elm St is just down the street, and Exxon is at 1517 N Jefferson St. Jack’s Family Restaurant at 307 US-31 and Roosters at 125 US-31 are close for a meal.

Personal mail isn’t sent to the jail itself. Address it to JailATM – Limestone County Jail, with the person’s name and inmate number, at 1605 Beltline Rd SW D8 #244, Decatur, AL 35601. Legal mail and subscriptions go to Limestone County Jail, 101 West Elm Street, P.O. Box 889, Athens, AL 35611. Books must be softcover and shipped by a retailer such as Amazon. Money can be added through JailATM online, at the kiosk, or by phone at (877) 810-0914, or you can mail a money order. JailATM also sells commissary gift packs. Inmate Sales handles phone accounts, text messages, and tablet rentals at (877) 998-5678.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Limestone County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Limestone County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Limestone County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
