The St. Clair County Jail is licensed for 323 inmates, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails turn over their inmate population on roughly this schedule:
Anyone held longer than twelve months is usually facing a serious charge like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in St. Clair County remain in custody at the St. Clair County facility much longer.
St. Clair County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 6,460 offenders every year.
St. Clair County now has one jail. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office runs it at 100 18th Street North in Pell City, AL 35125. It opened in 2023, can house up to 400 inmates, and replaced the old county jail in Ashville, which the county commission put up for sale in 2025. The sheriff still has an office in Ashville at 48 6th Street, Suite 300 ((205) 594-2140), but everyone arrested in the county is booked and held in Pell City. The jail holds both pre-sentenced and sentenced adults, and its lobby is open to the public 24 hours a day. Call the detention center at (205) 814-3525. The sheriff’s inmate roster at stclairsheriff.org/inmate-roster shows current bookings and releases. The Most Wanted page is at stclairsheriff.org. If a warrant may be out for you, talk with the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in. Case information is on Alacourt (v2.alacourt.com). The county has its own circuit, the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit, and under Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 a person must see a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest.
The sheriff’s office describes three kinds of bonds. A property bond is arranged at the sheriff’s office in Ashville or Pell City, must be approved by the sheriff, and needs one signer for a misdemeanor or two for a felony. A surety bond is written by a professional bail company, and its fee is non-refundable. A cash bond is the full amount, held by the court until the case ends. Every bond also requires a $35 transmittal fee, paid in cash only (no checks). For bond questions, call (205) 814-3527 in Pell City or (205) 594-2533 in Ashville. Whether bail is set at all follows Alabama law. Most defendants are entitled to it, but a judge may deny it in a capital case where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge may also deny it after a pretrial detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1, passed in May 2026 with 81.6% of the vote, added solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for a Class B felony, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, but judges can set more or less. Personal recognizance and unsecured appearance bonds are also possible.
Video visiting is handled by Inmate Sales (Combined Public Communications). Register at inmatesales.com first. On-site video visits are free, last 20 minutes, and run from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the day assigned to each inmate each week, with up to three visitors. Remote visits run from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and cost $0.20 a minute. Bring a state or government-issued photo ID. Anyone under 17 needs an adult with them. Low-cut tops, tank tops, short skirts, tight shorts and hats are not allowed. No public transit serves the jail, so plan to drive. The 76 station at 2018 Cogswell Avenue and the Texaco at 410 Martin Street S. are close for gas. McDonald’s (600 Martin Street N.) and Milo’s Hamburgers (615 Martin Street N.) are close for a bite.
Personal mail must be a 3×5 postcard sent to the inmate’s full name and ID number, St. Clair County Jail, 100 18th St. North, Pell City, AL 35125. Photos are accepted in an envelope marked “photos”. Legal mail may come in envelopes, and everything except legal mail is searched. The jail does not accept cash or money orders for inmate accounts. How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the St. Clair County Jail?
Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
St. Clair County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the St. Clair County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
