Greenlee County Jail
The 30-bed Greenlee County Jail can be contacted at 928-865-4149 for inmate information at any time of day.
This is the county’s booking facility. Anyone arrested here on a misdemeanor or felony charge is brought in for booking and processing, and may be held until they are bonded out, released on their own recognizance, or ordered to remain in custody until their trial ends.
Use the inmate search tool to view a list of inmates currently in custody.
Inmates sentenced to less than one year serve out their sentence in this county. Inmates sentenced to more are sent to the Arizona State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
On this page you’ll find the visitation schedule and policies, plus how to put money on an inmate’s account, send mail, take phone calls from an inmate, leave voicemail, email and text, rent a tablet, post bail, and buy commissary.
Keep the jail ID or booking number somewhere safe. It’s required for many communication services. If it’s not online, call Greenlee County Jail at 928-865-4149.

Everything from finding an inmate in the Greenlee County Jail to how jail rosters work and what happens after arrest and booking is covered in our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers. If you still have questions, call 928-865-4149.
The Greenlee County Jail is licensed to house 30 inmates, but it is often forced to hold many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arizona turn over at least 40% of their inmates per month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, with approximately 8-9% incarcerated six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Greenlee County remain in one of the Greenlee County facilities much longer.
Arizona’s court rules start with the presumption that a defendant will be released on their own recognizance. Bail is set only when a judge finds that isn’t enough to ensure the person returns to court or to protect public safety. Many people arrested in Arizona walk out without paying anything.
Greenlee County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 600 offenders annually.
Greenlee is one of Arizona’s smallest counties, and its only jail is the Greenlee County Jail in Clifton, run by the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office is at 824 S. Coronado Blvd., Clifton, AZ 85533, on the south end of town along U.S. 191, and its 24-hour line is (928) 865-4149. The detention office line is (928) 865-4159. The jail holds adults arrested anywhere in the county, from Clifton and Morenci to Duncan, most of them awaiting trial; others serve county sentences, and the sheriff runs a work release program. Calling is the most reliable way to find out whether someone is there; Arizona’s VINELink search can also help.
A first court date comes fast. Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.1 requires an initial appearance before a judge within 24 hours of arrest, or the person goes free. Because Rule 7.2 presumes release on the person’s own recognizance, many people are released at that hearing without posting money. A judge who sets bail can choose an unsecured, cash or secured appearance bond, which a licensed bail bond agent can also post, and can deny bail only after a hearing in the cases Article 2, Section 22 of the Arizona Constitution allows, such as capital cases or when no conditions could protect the community. The county posts a list of bail bond agents registered with the court on the sheriff’s page at greenlee.az.gov. Search court cases at Public Access to Court Information, and if you suspect a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning yourself in.
All visits are by video through HomeWAV, and every visitor needs a HomeWAV account at homewav.com. Visiting hours run every day, holidays included, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., 12:30 to 3:00 p.m., and 4:30 to 9:00 p.m. Each inmate gets one free on-site video visit a week at the jail plus unlimited remote visits from home at $0.50 a minute, and every visit lasts 30 minutes. Dress for an on-site visit as you would for court: nothing that shows the chest, midriff or undergarments, no swimwear, pajamas or see-through clothing, and no gang or offensive images.
HomeWAV also handles phone calls at $0.20 a minute and instant messages at $0.50 each. Call the jail to confirm the current mailing address and the inmate’s ID number before sending a letter, and ask how to put money on a commissary account. Access Securepak ((800) 546-6283) sells commissary packages. People from outside the county who are booked in pay a $45 booking fee, and the jail takes fee payments by money order or cashier’s check, not cash.
No public bus serves the jail, so plan to drive. The closest gas is the Circle K at 310 N. Coronado Blvd. in Clifton or the Conoco at 135 Mountain Ave. in Morenci. For food, try The Little Frisco at 307 Coronado Trail or Dina’s Karinderya at 701 N. Coronado Blvd.

How is booking conducted at Greenlee County Jail?
After an arrest, individuals are transported to Greenlee County Jail for the booking process. This procedure ensures the person’s identity, assesses charges, and determines if they will be released, eligible for bail, or detained until court.
Remaining silent during this process is vital. Anything said could be used as evidence, so it’s wise to wait for an attorney before speaking about the arrest.
Here’s a breakdown of the booking steps at Greenlee County Jail:
- Verifying identification information.
- Capturing mugshots for record-keeping.
- Health assessments and questions about criminal history.
- Possible DNA collection.
- Physical search for contraband or weapons.
- Securing personal belongings.
- Granting a free phone call.
For questions about an arrestee’s bond, call the facility at 928-865-4149.
How to post bail for someone arrested in Greenlee County
When an individual is arrested and booked at Greenlee County Jail in Clifton, the outcomes include:
1. Release without bail, under the condition they appear for their court date.
2. Remain in custody until the court appearance.
3. Post a bail or bond for release. Contact 928-865-4149 for specific bail amounts.
Bail payments can be made in different ways.
- Cash bonds must be paid in full, either at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, and are accepted as cash, cashier's check or money order; many jails also process cards through a lobby kiosk or online vendor for a fee, so bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and phone the jail at 928-865-4149 if needed.
- You can work with a licensed bail bondsman in Greenlee County.
- Many courts allow a property bond, letting an owner put up land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond (often double) through a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, with approval from the court that set bail.

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Greenlee County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Greenlee County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
