Yuma County Juvenile Detention
Yuma County Juvenile Detention
Juvenile offenders begin their experience at the juvenile court, where they will face an advisory hearing to learn about their charges, an adjudication hearing where a judge will determine guilt or innocence, and a disposition where they will hear their sentencing for the charges they face. The age of the youth in the facility can be as young as 8 years old and as old as 17 years old, after which they are in the adult system. There is space for up to 79 juvenile offenders in this facility, and they are housed in units that take into consideration age, charges, and needs. Males and females are housed in different units and will not interact during their stay. Males are housed with one person in each cell while the females have two in each cell, and they are permitted to have a book with them, while all other activities take place in the day room. Schoolwork is provided to ensure they maintain their education and grades, outdoor and indoor physical activity is provided, as well as all medical and mental health care needs. Mail: Only postcards are permitted, and letters will be rejected, however they may both send and receive postcards to their family and friends, but no one who is on probation or parole is permitted contact with those who are being detained. Phones: Phone calls are permitted to be made, but incoming or long distance calls are not permitted, and the time, length, and frequency of calls are determined by the level they have acquired with their behaviors and decisions. Visitation: Visits are determined by the level and behavior of each individual student, and must be arranged with the facility.Inmate Services

The Yuma County Juvenile Detention is licensed for 60 inmates at any given time, but it is often forced to make room for many more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Arizona, at least 40% of inmates turn over each month, another 30% every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and approximately 8-9% remain in custody between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Yuma County stay at one of the Yuma County facilities much longer.
Arizona’s court rules start from the presumption that a defendant is released on their own recognizance. Judges set bail only when that isn’t enough to ensure the person returns to court or to protect public safety. Because of this, many people arrested in Arizona, including those arrested in Yuma County, are released without paying anything.
Approximately 16,320 offenders are arrested and detained each year by Yuma County law enforcement agencies.
