At any given time, the Ashley County Detention Center is licensed to hold 56 inmates, but it is often forced to take in more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Arkansas, at least 40% of inmates turn over every month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% stay six to twelve months. Inmates held more than twelve months are typically facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to get ready for trial, offenders arrested in Ashley County remain at one of the Ashley County facilities much longer.
Under the Arkansas Constitution, bail is available before trial for every offense except capital crimes where the proof is evident or the presumption is great. In Ashley County, a judge can release a defendant on their own recognizance, impose conditions, or set a bail amount, depending on the case.
Ashley County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 1,120 offenders annually.
The Ashley County Detention Center is on the west edge of Hamburg at 842 Ashley Road 12 West, Hamburg, AR 71646. It shares the property with the Ashley County Sheriff’s Office, which runs the jail under Sheriff Tommy Sturgeon. For anything about a person in custody, call (870) 853-2040. The jail holds men and women arrested anywhere in the county, from Crossett and Hamburg to Fountain Hill, Montrose and Wilmot. Most are waiting for a court date. Others are serving county time or waiting for transfer to state prison.
Searching for someone? The quickest way is to call the jail. You can also look the person up on VINELink at vinelink.vineapps.com, which shows custody status for Arkansas jails and lets you sign up for release alerts. After booking, the person goes before a judge without unnecessary delay, usually within 48 hours of arrest (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1).
Bail in Arkansas begins with the state constitution: everyone is bailable before conviction except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Rules 9.1 and 9.2 tell the judge to consider release on recognizance or with conditions first, and to set money bail only when those won’t reasonably make sure the person returns to court. Once bail is set, call (870) 853-2040 for the amount and how to pay. A licensed bail bondsman charges 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 (Arkansas Code §17-19-301), paid in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees.
Visits are scheduled by housing unit, and each visit lasts 30 minutes. Staff can end a visit for safety reasons or rule violations. Bring photo ID and dress modestly, and call ahead to confirm the day for your person’s unit.
Inmate phones and tablets go through City Tele Coin. Call (800) 682-0707 or (318) 746-1114 to set up an account. Address mail with the person’s complete name, inmate number and the jail’s street address, and put your full name and return address on it. Magazines and sexually explicit material are not allowed. During the first seven days, families may bring a small set of clothing for a new arrival: plain white socks, plain white T-shirts or bras, plain white underwear, eyeglasses and one softcover Bible. Call before bringing anything.
Court records are on Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad. If you’re worried about a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or a defense attorney before you go in.

What is the booking process for the Ashley County Detention Center?
After being arrested, the offender is brought to the Ashley County Detention Center for booking, which is the detailed process of identifying, classifying, deciding on charges, and whether the person will either be released on their own recognizance, allowed to be released on bail, or moved into the jail until their court date.
The first thing every newly arrested person must do is close their mouth. Everything an offender says may be used against them, so the best thing to do is remain silent when questioned about the arrest and what led to it.
These are the steps of booking someone into the Ashley County Detention Center:
- Personal identification.
- Mugshot(s).
- Questions about medical history, mental health, drug and alcohol use, and gang affiliations.
- Possible DNA.
- Full body search.
- Property forfeiture.
- Free phone call.
If you have any questions about when you can pay an offender's bond and what the cost will be, call the facility at 870-853-2040.
How do you pay bail for someone who has been arrested in Ashley County?
When an offender is arrested and brought to the Ashley County Detention Center in Hamburg for booking, there are several outcomes after being processed.
1. The offender will be released with no bail, promising to return on a specific date to appear before a judge in either Municipal or Ashley County Court.
2. The offender is ordered to remain in jail until their court date.
3. The offender is allowed to be released after paying a specified bond or bail. Call 870-853-2040 to get the exact amount.
The payment of an offender's bail or bond can take many shapes.
- A cash bond is paid in full at the jail's bonding window or the clerk of court, usually by cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails also take debit or credit cards through a lobby kiosk or an online bond vendor for an added fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and the jail's number is 870-853-2040.
- It can be paid using a bail company, licensed to do business in Ashley County.
- Many courts accept land or a home as bond collateral; the owner shows clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, often double, using a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the property.

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Ashley County Detention Center uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
**Call 870-853-2040 first to ask Ashley County Detention Center if this option is still available.
