For anything else, call the Garland County Detention Center at 501-651-7833.

The Garland County Detention Center is licensed for 499 inmates, but it is often forced to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Typical turnover at city and county jails is at least 40% of the inmate population each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, with approximately 8-9% staying six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months usually face serious charges such as rape or murder. Because it takes longer to prepare those cases for trial, offenders arrested in Garland County remain in one of the Garland County facilities much longer.

Under the Arkansas Constitution, everyone charged with a crime is entitled to bail before trial, except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. For any other charge, judges in Garland County can release a defendant on their own recognizance, set conditions of release, or set a bail amount.

Every year, Garland County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 9,980 offenders.

About the Garland County Detention Center

The Garland County Adult Detention Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas is a medium security facility with a capacity of 499 detainees. As a part of the 499 inmates, the Garland County Detention Center also must make room for  22 women and eight men who the county must hold as part of the Arkansas Department of Correction's 309 work release program for state prisoners.

The Detention Center covers 175,000 square feet on 57 acres and consists of eight inmate housing units. It has the capacity to increase to 600 inmate beds if they can get the staffing, but untiol that point they are limited by state statute to 499 inmates.

When someone is arrested in Hot Springs or anywhere else in Garland County, they are usually taken to the Garland County Detention Center at 3564 Albert Pike Road, Hot Springs, AR 71913. The Garland County Sheriff’s Office opened the $42 million, 168,000-square-foot jail in 2015 on 57 acres west of town. It is the largest building the county runs, with eight housing units, an alternative sentencing unit, a medical unit, a courtroom, booking, and video visitation, and it has room for close to 500 people. The detention center’s number is (501) 651-7804; the sheriff’s main office at 525 Ouachita Avenue can be reached at (501) 622-3660.

Men and women are held here: mostly people awaiting trial, along with people serving county time and state inmates waiting for transfer to the Arkansas Division of Correction. Staff use direct supervision, working inside the housing units. The jail is accredited by the American Correctional Association and offers GED testing and education through National Park College, plus agricultural programs with the University of Arkansas.

Use the county’s Garland County inmate roster to check custody status. After booking, a person must be taken before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1). Garland County makes up the 18th-East Judicial Circuit, and you can follow charges and hearing dates through Search ARCourts. If you believe there’s a warrant out, call the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.

On bail, Arkansas’s Constitution (Art. 2, §8) makes everyone bailable before conviction except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Judges look first at release on recognizance or with conditions, and set money bail only when nothing less will reasonably ensure a return to court (Rules 9.1–9.2). A bondsman’s premium is set by Ark. Code §17-19-301 at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 and paid in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees. Call the detention center for the bond amount and how to pay it.

All visits are by video and are booked through Smart Communications at SmartJailMail.com. The inmate sets up the account and sends a connection request, which you approve. On-site visits at the jail are free on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8:40 p.m.; each inmate gets two a week, schedule at least 24 hours ahead, and arrive 15 minutes early. Up to two people may visit (children under 5 don’t count), adults need government-issued photo ID, and anyone under 18 must come with a parent, adult relative or guardian. No sleeveless or see-through clothing, exposed midriffs, revealing necklines, or offensive or gang-related logos, and wear real shoes. Leave bags, food, drinks, phones and medications in the car. Remote visits from home run every day from noon to 8:40 p.m. in 20- or 40-minute sessions for a fee, also booked 24 hours ahead, and the same dress and conduct rules apply on camera.

Personal mail goes through a scanning center and is read on kiosks: Inmate Name #Booking Number, Smart Communications / Garland Co. Det. Ctr., PO Box 9141, Seminole, FL 33775-9141. Put the name and booking number clearly on the envelope. A free MailGuard Tracker account will tell you if a letter was delivered or rejected. Commissary money goes through TEAM3.InmateCanteen.com, and messaging and phone service run through SmartInmate.com.

Hot Springs Intracity Transit’s Route 2 stops at the Walmart on Albert Pike, but that is still well east of the jail, so most visitors drive. Near the detention center you’ll find Shell at 3039 Albert Pike Road and Valero at 2616 Albert Pike Road, with Chicken Express at 3019 Albert Pike Road and Sonic Drive-In at 1510 Albert Pike Road.

Recent Bookings & Arrests

What happens during booking at Garland County Detention Center?

After arrest, individuals are processed at Garland County Detention Center, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.

The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.

  • Verifying the person’s identity.
  • Taking mugshots.
  • Questions regarding medical and mental health history, along with drug and gang affiliations.
  • Collecting DNA if necessary.
  • Conducting a physical search.
  • Confiscating personal belongings.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How do you post bail in Garland County?

If someone is taken to Garland County Detention Center in Hot Springs for booking, the next steps depend on their case:

1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 501-651-7833.

Bail payments can be handled in various ways.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 501-651-7833.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Garland County can facilitate payment.
  • Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Garland County Detention Center?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Garland County Detention Center uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Garland County Detention Center first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
