The Baxter County Detention Center is licensed to hold 165 inmates, though it frequently has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arkansas see a monthly turnover of at least 40% of inmates, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who remain longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Since those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Baxter County remain in custody at one of the Baxter County facilities much longer.
Arkansas’s constitution gives everyone charged with a crime the right to bail before trial, except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Baxter County can set bail for any other offense, or release the defendant on their own recognizance or with conditions.
Approximately 3,300 offenders are arrested and detained by Baxter County law enforcement agencies every year.
The Baxter County Detention Center in Mountain Home holds everyone arrested in Baxter County, whether by the sheriff’s deputies, Mountain Home police or smaller town departments. The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff John Montgomery, runs the jail at 904 Highway 62 West, Mountain Home, AR 72653. The main number, (870) 425-7000, is answered 24 hours a day. Lt. Tabitha Maze is the jail administrator. A 2018–2019 expansion added 50 beds, and the November 2025 state inspection put capacity at 172, with an average daily count of about 90. The facility has separate housing for low- and medium-risk men, high-risk men and women, plus an in-house medical unit with a nurse practitioner. In 2025 the jail booked 2,008 people, and about three in four were booked on misdemeanors.
The sheriff posts a searchable inmate roster at baxtercountysheriff.com/inmate-roster. Accept the disclaimer, then search current inmates or people released in the last 48 hours. Listings usually show charges and bond amounts. A newly booked person gets one free call, to a lawyer or about bond. People who are arrested must see a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1).
Under the Arkansas Constitution, Article 2, Section 8, everyone is bailable before conviction except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Judges follow Rules 9.1 and 9.2: they consider recognizance or conditional release first and set money bail only when nothing less will reasonably make sure the person returns. Baxter County takes cash bonds and surety bonds written by licensed bail bond companies. The sheriff’s office says property bonds and release on recognizance are rarely approved at the jail. A bondsman charges 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5, and you must pay it in full before release (Arkansas Code §17-19-301), plus small nonrefundable state fees. Call (870) 425-7000 to ask when bonds can be posted.
Visits are in person, assigned by last name. Men with last names A–I visit Tuesday, J–R Wednesday and S–Z Saturday. All women visit Friday. Each visiting day has three windows: 7:00–9:30 a.m., 1:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:30–9:30 p.m. There are no visits Sunday, Monday or Thursday. Every visitor needs valid government-issued photo ID and is screened for warrants. No more than two visitors may come at once. Children under 6 cannot visit, and visitors 7 to 17 must come with an adult. Leave phones and cameras in the car, and dress conservatively. People with a pending felony case, an active no-contact order, or a felony conviction (unless they are pre-approved immediate family) are turned away.
Phones work differently here than at most jails: the sheriff ended the inmate phone system on March 30, 2025, and the jail doesn’t take incoming calls except to pass along emergency messages. Mail and visits are the main ways to stay in touch, so call the jail to ask about current options. Address mail with the person’s full name and booking number, Baxter County Detention Center, 904 Hwy 62 W, Mountain Home, AR 72653, and call to confirm current mail rules before sending. The lobby has a commissary kiosk that is open around the clock, including nights and holidays. It doesn’t currently take credit or debit cards. Medical co-pays come out of the person’s commissary balance.
Court cases can be looked up on Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad. The sheriff also posts warrant and most-wanted lists on baxtercountysheriff.com. If your name might be on one, talk to an attorney or the sheriff’s office first and plan for bond before you turn yourself in.
Mountain Home has no fixed-route bus to the jail, so most families drive. The jail is just west of downtown. Casey’s at 220 Highway 5 and Exxon at 101 Highway 5 are both open 24 hours. For a quick bite, Dairy Queen is at 140 S. Main St. and Hardee’s at 500 E. North St.
After arrest, individuals are processed at Baxter County Detention Center, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.
The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.
