Independence County Detention Facility Inmate Search
Batesville arrests: the Independence County Detention Facility
Independence County sits on the White River in north-central Arkansas, and Batesville, one of the oldest towns in the state, is its seat. The sheriff runs the Independence County Detention Facility on West Main Street, which holds about 80 people. Start with the Independence County jail roster to see who is held.
This page covers lookups, bond, court, visits, calls, money, mail, medical needs, holds and transfers. The roster shows names, booking dates and charges, and bond amounts appear once a judge sets them. Young people are held separately at the White River Juvenile Detention Center and do not appear on the adult list.
Your first call is the sheriff's office at 870-793-8838. Ask whether your loved one is still held in Batesville, what the charges and bond are, and when the first court date is set. Getting someone out is covered on our bail page, and hearings on our court process guide.

↑ Back to the question list3. What Arkansas law says about timing
Any Independence County arrest without a warrant needs a judge to agree on cause by hour 48, and the Batesville first appearance follows quickly.
↑ Back to the question list4. Independence County courts
District court in Batesville covers misdemeanors; circuit court there handles felonies. See court process.
↑ Back to the question list5. Bonding out in Batesville
Batesville accepts a full cash bond, which is handed back after the final hearing when the defendant never misses court, or a licensed bondsman steps in, charging at most ten percent. Get the amount from the sheriff first. See bail.
↑ Back to the question list6. Court-appointed lawyers
The Batesville judge decides at first appearance whether to give the person a public defender.
↑ Back to the question list7. How can I tell if someone at the Independence County Detention Facility has other warrants?
Ask the sheriff's office at 870-793-8838 whether any warrants or detainers are attached to the booking. A name search using Search ARCourts, the state's free case search, may also turn up cases filed in other counties. When another warrant exists, an attorney can contact that court and ask for bond so release happens all at once. Old unpaid fines are a frequent cause, and paying at the district court can settle them. Meanwhile, the Circuit Clerk in Batesville answers felony questions at 870-793-8833.
↑ Back to the question list8. Visiting
Visits are about 20 minutes. The Batesville desk shares the schedule by phone and asks visitors for picture ID. See visits and remote visits.
↑ Back to the question list9. Phones in the Batesville jail
On West Main Street, the inmate does the dialing, never the other way around, and taped calls are kept. Calls go out only, billed to a prepaid account. See phones, messages, tablets.
↑ Back to the question list10. Funding an Independence County account
Independence County's commissary list includes food, hygiene goods and envelopes, all paid from the balance. Money covers commissary and calls. See deposits and commissary.
↑ Back to the question list11. Mailing to West Main Street
Batesville deputies read through incoming mail, and envelopes with no sender listed may be thrown out. Their legal name and 569 West Main Street go on the envelope. See mail.
↑ Back to the question list12. White River Juvenile Detention Center
Youth from Independence and nearby counties may be held at the White River Juvenile Detention Center, 105 County Yard Road, Batesville, phone 870-612-6814. Parents should call about visits.
↑ Back to the question list13. Medical needs
A call to the West Main Street jail lets nurses know about prescriptions or mental health risks.
↑ Back to the question list14. Before heading to Batesville
The Batesville schedule shifts with housing changes; a release or court date can cancel a visit. Call 870-793-8838 to check custody, bond and the visiting schedule.
↑ Back to the question list15. What if federal agents brought the charge?
Most federal arrests are made by IRS agents, the DEA, or postal inspectors. Batesville falls under the Northern Division in the Eastern District of Arkansas; cases are set at the U.S. courthouse in Jonesboro, 615 South Main Street, Room 312, Jonesboro, AR 72401. Clerk's phone: 870-972-4610. The first hearing is held fast, before a magistrate judge. In contrast to state court, a federal judge does not look up a bail amount. A release hearing applying the Bail Reform Act decides whether they go home. Ahead of the hearing, a pretrial officer asks about work, home life and past cases and tells the judge what it found.
Most federal defendants wait in the Batesville jail contracted by the U.S. Marshals. Check the county roster first, where a federal hold may show. You can also call the Eastern District office of the Marshals Service at 501-324-6256 (600 West Capitol Avenue, Suite A328, Little Rock, AR 72201). When prison time is ordered, the BOP picks the prison and the move may take a while. Search with the federal locator using the register number.
↑ Back to the question list16. A friend got an ICE detainer. What now?
- During booking, fingerprints go to Homeland Security. ICE may then send a detainer.
- ICE asks the jailers to hold the person for up to 48 hours once the local case ends. A holiday does not freeze the count.
- Paying bail doesn't lift it. The hold simply begins then.
- Immigration officers often collect them in person within those 48 hours. Deadline passed? In that case the detainer lapses and staff must let them leave.
- Where they are sent depends on ICE.
- To reach ICE's field office near New Orleans: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, or by phone at 504-318-2360.
- Search for the person on the ICE detainee locator once ICE takes custody, typing in the A-number and the country of birth. Missing the A-number? Enter nation of birth, birth date and their full name instead.
17. How does a move from the Batesville jail to state prison happen?
Prison sentences are handled through the ADC. At first, they wait in the county jail until the ADC schedules the move, sometimes for weeks. The trip ends at intake, and there new prisoners get checked in. There, officers weigh gang links, their risk level and physical and mental health. Last, they go to a unit that fits that rating.
Open the state inmate search for their unit. For visits and mail, read Arkansas state prisons.
↑ Back to the question list18. Are Independence County mugshots posted online?
Yes. Independence County mugshots appear in the Independence County jail roster, next to each name.
ICE intake photos aren't handed out at the office. The route is an ICE records request, which the agency reviews. Media outlets hoping for a booking picture can try the sheriff's office on 870-793-8838. Families and the press cannot see federal mugshots. Marshals policy limits sharing to a few situations: for someone who escaped, when it's required immediately for community safety, or to help an arrest or warn the public.
↑ Back to the question list19. Independence County police and sheriff
- Batesville Police: 870-569-8111
- Independence County Sheriff's Office: 870-793-8838
Southside, Newark, Cave City and rural areas rely on deputies unless their town lists its own police.
