11. What happens after a federal arrest near San Andreas?

These cases are made by teams from the Secret Service, the FBI, the IRS, and the U.S. Marshals. San Andreas sits in the federal Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division, so hearings are set at the federal courthouse in Sacramento, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Clerk's phone: 916-930-4000. Expect an initial appearance before a federal magistrate the next court day. The judge reviews a report from pretrial services. Different from the county, the federal court doesn't look up a bail amount. A hearing on release run under the Bail Reform Act of 1984 settles detention or release.

Start on the county roster. This district's Marshals staff can say which jail has them: 916-930-2030, 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Until sentencing, U.S. Marshals most often place federal prisoners in a county jail. Any prison term means a transfer to the federal Bureau of Prisons. The BOP inmate locator shows which jail has them after that.

12. How does an ICE hold work here?

  • Immigration officers hear about most arrests from fingerprints staff take. ICE may then lodge a detainer.
  • A paid bond doesn't clear the detainer.
  • Once that request arrives, jailers are asked to keep them for immigration officers up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). San Andreas jail staff apply the California Values Act (Gov. Code 7284.6): release comes when the local case ends, and cooperation such as a release-date notice or a transfer is limited to judicial warrants and certain serious convictions.
  • Officers from ICE often take custody within that window. If ICE stays away, this should mean release.
  • The online detainee locator looks up people using the inmate's A-number and country of birth. If the inmate's A-number is unknown, fill in the name as spelled on ID, DOB and native country.
  • ICE alone chooses the next facility.
  • For questions, call ICE's San Francisco field office at 415-365-8800; the office is at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.

13. What happens after a state prison sentence?

California's prison system, the CDCR, takes anyone given prison time. They usually wait in the San Andreas jail until the CDCR picks them up. The transfer lands them at intake, and there they get booked into the system. There, officers look at health care needs, security risk and gang ties. Next comes a facility that matches their rating.

Check the CDCR's inmate locator to locate them. For prison details, see California prison pages.

14. Are Calaveras County mugshots posted online?

No. Calaveras posts no inmate list online, so no Calaveras mugshots are posted. VINELink tells you custody status only.

PC 13665 is the key law. Social media is what it covers. Most nonviolent arrests fall under it. Those mugshots can't go on social media. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. The rule skips the sheriff's own site. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

A journalist can seek an unreleased mugshot from sheriff's staff, 209-754-6500. Immigration pictures become available only through a records request to ICE, though release isn't promised. Federal mugshots are kept private. Media or family requests will not change that; the Marshals share one only to locate a fugitive or escapee, when the public must be protected quickly or if the photo could help make an arrest or caution residents.

15. Which agency arrested them in Calaveras County?

Angels Camp is the county's only city. Everywhere else is Sheriff's territory, with the Highway Patrol on state highways.

16. Is someone at the Jeff Tuttle Drive jail being held in San Andreas on a warrant?

Possibly. Deputies bring people in on local and out-of-county warrants and book them at the Adult Detention Facility. Phone the Sheriff's Office at 209-754-6500 and ask; staff check warrants by phone, statewide ones too. A name typed into the Superior Court's online portal brings up open Calaveras cases and hearing dates. Anyone hoping to stay ahead of an arrest can arrange to turn themselves in alongside an attorney, which usually makes the first hearing calmer. After a missed hearing, the clerk on Government Center Drive explains how to get back on calendar.
