Monterey County Juvenile Hall

With a maximum of 114 beds for 114 youth offenders, the Monterey County Juvenile Hall is also known as the Wellington M. Smith Jr. Juvenile Hall. There are three ways in which a youth will find themselves housed here, including waiting for the results of further investigation, waiting for their court procedures, or waiting to be placed somewhere else. Probation violations are housed at this location, as well as those who are newly arrested. Each member of staff is focused on safety and security, as well as creating an environment where youth can grow and develop new life skills and other skills. Staff includes behavioral health staff, nursing staff, and teachers that provide medical and mental health services as well as continuing education, with a focus on helping these youth to reintegrate back into their community. All of the programs and care provided create an opporutnity for each individual to grow both as an individual as well as a member of their community, and they are encouraged to develop good decision making skills and to engage in positive behaviors. Do you have an outstanding warrant in Monterey County or anywhere in California? Need information about a court case involving you, a friend, or a relative? Start by visiting the California Superior Court.

In Monterey County, as in every California court, most criminal defendants have a constitutional right to bail before trial, except in certain capital and violent felony cases. A California Supreme Court ruling requires judges to consider whether a defendant can afford bail and prohibits holding someone solely because they can’t pay unless no less restrictive option would protect public safety or ensure a court appearance. Under Rule 4.101, whether a defendant wants a jury trial cannot factor into the bail amount.

To find out how much bail an inmate needs, call the Monterey County Juvenile Hall at 831-755-3782. You can also look up the Monterey County bail schedule yourself if you know the charge. The county accepts cash, surety bonds, and property bonds.

Here’s what to know about the Monterey County Juvenile Hall’s population:

  • Licensed capacity: 114 inmates, though the jail often has to make room for more, especially on weekends
  • Typical monthly turnover at city and county jails: at least 35-40%
  • Additional turnover every 90 days: 25-30%
  • Additional turnover every six months: 15-20%
  • Held six to twelve months: about 8-9%

Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in one of the Monterey County facilities much longer.

Every year, Monterey County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 25,980 offenders.
