Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility Inmate Search

Do you suspect there’s a warrant for your arrest in Ventura County or elsewhere in California? Or do you need details about a court case involving a friend or relative? A good place to start is the California Superior Court.

Most criminal defendants in Ventura County and throughout California have a constitutional right to be released on bail before trial, with exceptions for certain capital and violent felony charges. The California Supreme Court has held that a person cannot be kept in jail solely because they can’t afford bail unless no less restrictive condition would protect public safety or ensure their return to court, so judges must consider ability to pay. Under Rule 4.101, judges also cannot consider whether a defendant has asked for a jury trial.

Want to know how much an inmate’s bail is? Call the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility at 805-654-3335, or if you know the charge, check the bail schedule for Ventura County. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond.

The Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility is licensed for 890 inmates, but it is often forced to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in California see at least 35-40% turnover every month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months. Roughly 8-9% remain incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in one of the Ventura County facilities much longer.

Ventura County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 42,800 offenders per year.

About the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility

The Pre-Trial Detention Facility, which the Sheriff’s Office also calls the Main Jail, is the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office’s central booking jail. It sits inside the Ventura County Government Center at 800 South Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009, next to the Hall of Justice and about a mile north of US-101 off Victoria Avenue. For questions about a person in custody, call (805) 654-3335. In use for more than 45 years, it handles over 23,000 bookings and releases a year. Its state-rated capacity is 890 beds, and in late 2025 it held about 620 people a day, almost all men, most awaiting court on felony charges, including people with medical and psychiatric needs. Most women in county custody are housed at the Todd Road Jail.

People arrested in the east end of the county, around Thousand Oaks, may first be taken to the Sheriff’s East County Jail at the East County Patrol Station, 2101 E. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks, (805) 494-8242. It is a booking and short-term holding site, not a housing jail: people are usually held 6 to 12 hours and then brought to the Pre-Trial Detention Facility to finish booking. The Sheriff’s inmate search takes a first and last name or a booking number and covers every county jail. Write down the booking number, because you’ll need it for mail, deposits and visits. Anyone held must be arraigned within 48 hours of arrest, not counting Sundays and holidays (Penal Code §825). Criminal cases are heard next door at the Hall of Justice.

Most people have a right to bail under the California Constitution (Art. I, §12 and §28(f)(3)). The exceptions are capital crimes, certain violent or sexual-assault felonies, and felony threats where clear and convincing evidence shows a substantial likelihood of great bodily harm, and public safety comes first. Judges can depart from the Superior Court’s bail schedule (Penal Code §1269b) or release someone on their own recognizance or under supervision, and under In re Humphrey (2021) they must consider ability to pay.

Bail is posted at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. The jail accepts:

  • cash, in the exact amount
  • a cashier’s check, certified check or money order made payable to the Ventura County Superior Court (for a case from another county, make it payable to that county’s court)
  • a bail bond from a licensed bail agent
  • a credit or debit card through GovPayNet, online or at (888) 604-7888, using PLC code 6404

Staff at the East County Jail also accept bail bonds and deposits for anyone in Sheriff’s custody. The Superior Court’s criminal clerk at the Hall of Justice takes cash, check, money order or credit card at its window, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., (805) 289-8545. The court’s Simi Valley courthouse at 3855-F Alamo Street also has a payment window. Look up case numbers and warrants in the court’s Online Public Access search, and talk to a defense attorney before surrendering on a warrant.

In-person visits are free. They’re held Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in three sessions: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m. Call (805) 654-3335 first to make sure the person can have visitors. Check in at the Public Reception Lobby; check-in opens an hour before each session and closes 30 minutes before it ends. Each person gets two 30-minute visits a week, with no more than two visitors at a time: two adults, or one adult and one child. A child has to come with a parent, grandparent or legal guardian. Adults need government-issued photo ID, and a driver’s license can’t be more than 30 days expired. Wear sleeves and shoes, and leave your phone, smartwatch and bag in the car, since there are no lockers. Anyone released from a Ventura County jail in the last year can’t visit. Video visits through Securus cost $6 for 30 minutes and run 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Book them 24 hours to two weeks ahead. If you’re traveling a long way, call ahead to confirm the session and ask whether any extra time is possible.

All Ventura County jails share one mailing address: the person’s first and last name and booking number, P.O. Box 6929, Ventura, CA 93006. Letters and postcards are fine. Skip glitter, stickers, tape and scents. You can send up to five photos per envelope, 4×6 or smaller. Softcover books, magazines and newspapers have to come straight from the publisher or an authorized retailer, not a marketplace seller. To add money, use the JPay kiosk in the lobby, jpay.com, or (800) 574-5729. Calls run through Securus, and prepaid Advance Connect accounts are set up through Securus (call-blocking line (800) 844-6591). Most people get a free tablet once they leave reception housing, and you can buy email bundles through the Sheriff’s website.

To release property, the person in custody fills out a Property Release form. A relative or friend with a photo ID, such as a California driver’s license or ID card, picks it up at the Public Reception Lobby. Call first to confirm it’s ready. Property that isn’t picked up goes with a person transferred to state prison, or they can pay to mail it out of county. Releases usually take one to four hours once they start. Except for bail-outs and immediate court-ordered releases, no one is released between midnight and 6 a.m.

The Government Center has a bus stop at Victoria Avenue and Telephone Road. For gas, there’s ExtraMile at 1121 S. Victoria Ave. and USA Gasoline at 1717 S. Victoria Ave. For a quick bite, try Wendy’s at 1401 S. Victoria Ave. or Carl’s Jr. at 1745 S. Victoria Ave. Overnight options include Motel 6 Ventura – South (3075 Johnson Dr.), Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ventura Harbor (1080 Navigator Dr.) and Holiday Inn Oxnard – Ventura (600 E. Esplanade Dr., Oxnard).

Inmate Bail and Bonding

Paying bail for someone in Ventura County

After being arrested and booked into Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura, the arrestee's situation will proceed in one of three ways:

1. They may be released without bail and required to attend a court hearing.
2. They may be held in custody until their court date.
3. Bail can be posted for their release; call 805-654-3335 for the exact bail amount.

There are multiple ways to pay bail.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, accepted as cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails let you pay by card at a lobby kiosk or with an online bond vendor for a fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number when you go, and the jail is at 805-654-3335.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Ventura County can facilitate the process.
  • Many courts accept a home or land as collateral for bond, as long as the owner proves clear title and equity at least equal to the bond amount (often twice it) with a deed and a current tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the pledge.
