About the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center
The Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center is one of several regional short term facilities that are located around Georgia. Each supports the surrounding counties and communities, and they are set so each location has a facility within an hour of its location. The Gainesville Facility serves the counties of Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Oconee, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White. It has a capacity of over 60 youth, and this includes the medical wing, segregation unit, and several housing units that are made of a common area surrounded by individual or double cells. Within the common areas are tables for meals and games, small libraries for books to read, and other activities, access to the bathrooms for the unit where residents will shower and prepare for the day. During the day there is a strict routine that must be followed including school during the week in the provided classrooms, therapy or counselling as needed, physical education or exercise, and recreational time. Students may receive a GED during their detention and will be permitted to have contact with their immediate family and some friends through mail, phone calls, and visits. Mail: 450 CRESCENT DR GAINESVILLE, GA 30501-2536 All mail that enters the facility must be delivered by the postal system and will be inspected for content and contraband, with any that breaks the rules around mail being refused. Phones: Phones are provided for regular calls to those who are on the approved phone number list for each of the students. Visitation: In person and onsite visits are provided once a week, with some being able to access video calls for remote visits more frequently. Visitors will receive details on their visit.
