Standing in the downtown in white concrete, the small, high windows placed on the front and sides of the 108-bed Barton County Detention Facility easily displays what it is. It is at this location that all of the offenders who are arrested on either felony or misdemeanor charges will be booked, assessed, and housed, as they wait for their trial, bail, or as they serve a sentence as provided by the court.

In order to determine if an offender is in the jail there is an online roster with names, charges, and release dates and the staff are able to answer questions by calling 620-793-1876. There are 108 beds in the Barton County Detention Facility and they house both male and female inmates, with the housing assignments being determined by gender, seriousness of charges, history of behavior during past incarcerations, and any special considerations.

As a full service facility, all of the meals, health care, mental health care, exercise and recreation activities, and life skills are provided throughout incarceration. For improved mental health and safety of the facility, inmates are also encouraged to remain in contact with their friends and their family who are not incarcerated through mail, phone calls, and visits.

Mail is sent directly to the jail with the full name of the inmate:

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How do you post bail in Barton County?

If someone is taken to Barton County Detention Facility in Great Bend for booking, the next steps depend on their case:

1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 620-793-1876.

Bail payments can be handled in various ways.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 620-793-1876.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Barton County can facilitate payment.
  • Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.
