Nevada has 16 counties, plus Carson City, which stands on its own. The sheriff runs the jail. Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas is the one that matters for most families. Washoe County in Reno is the other large jail. Elko, Carson City, and Douglas cover the rest of the traffic. A county on the Utah line may have a small jail or book into a neighbor. City police departments have holding rooms. They are not county jails.
Jails in Nevada hold people before trial and people serving a year or less. A longer felony sentence goes to the Department of Corrections. A federal sentence goes to the Bureau of Prisons. FCI Herlong is just over the line in California, and Nevada has no large federal prison of its own.
The department’s prisons are High Desert and Southern Desert, both in Indian Springs, Ely State Prison, Lovelock, and Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Center in Las Vegas opened in 1997 and is rated for 950. Conservation camps still operate at Carlin, Jean, Pioche, Stewart, and Three Lakes Valley. Casa Grande and the Northern Nevada Transitional Housing center are the step-down beds. These are not county jails.
One sheriff’s jail for each county that keeps one, and a city jail in Carson City. Clark County is the exception that fills the map. When a rural jail holds someone for another county, for the state, or for the U.S. Marshals, it bills a daily rate. A family in Ely can be looking at a five-hour drive if the person has already been moved to Indian Springs.
County detention and state commitment are different stops. Clark and Washoe run the large juvenile detention centers. Several rural counties, including Elko, keep a smaller lockup for a youth waiting on a hearing. Counties without a center contract.
The Division of Child and Family Services runs the commitment side. It has three facilities, not detention halls. On October 1, 2026, Caliente Youth Center held 32 boys and 14 girls. Nevada Youth Training Center in Elko held 30 boys. Summit View Youth Center held 26 boys. The total that day was 102. A youth in a county detention center is waiting on court. A youth at Caliente, Elko, or Summit View has been committed. Search the county of the arrest. The listing shows the local detention center, and a state facility only if the youth has been committed.
Booking at Clark County is a long line: identity, prints, a medical screen, a search, property bagged, one phone call. The person has not been convicted. The unit still runs on counts. In July the holding cell is hot. Food is plain, the uniform does not fit, and the first night is noisy. Withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, or methamphetamine can start before the first appearance.
Deputies who apply the rules the same way to everyone run a quieter floor. Uneven rules are how contraband moves. Clark and Washoe can separate by risk. A small rural jail often cannot, and a full jail there means a transfer.
Most Nevada jails sell tablet time, video visits, and deposits through a vendor. Those accounts can be shut off. Each county page on this site lists the jail phone, the vendor, and the way to send money for that sheriff’s office.
