About the Coos County Jail

The Coos County Department of Corrections is responsible for the safety of the community, the security of the 250-bed Coos County Jail and the welfare of both staff and inmates. All offenders from Coos County, both felony and misdemeanor charges, male or female, are held at Coos County Jail as they wait for their trail as well as during their sentence. The number of inmates in custody has been reduced since 2020, however the large number of beds remains.

Details on bail, visitation, and status of inmates is available both online as well as by calling the jail at 603-246-3315.

Upon intake, the booking process is completed, which includes a medical screening, fingerprinting and mugshots, DNA sample, along with an assessment to determine security needs, medical needs, mental health requirements, and housing assignment.

Staff is available to transport all inmates to court dates and any medical appointments or emergency needs, as well as inspecting all mail for contraband, receiving commissary funds and other money for inmates, maintaining the safety of the community and the security of the facility, and other tasks.

The Coos County Jail also provides several other services to inmates including basic needs in meals, laundry, and hygiene items, and programs including AA, counseling, religious programs, education, recreation, and opportunities to grow social and life skills.

Work programs are in place and all inmates are expected to participate both in rehabilitation programs and education, as well as to do work tasks around the campus. These programs not only provide employable skills but also ensure inmates have a purpose and something to stay busy with.

While medical care and mental health services are both provided, it has been seen that those who have contact with their family or friends during their incarceration will have better mental health and reduced recidivism than those who not, along with keeping the building safer for everyone.

Mail is one of the main ways in which to communicate with an inmate and appropriate photographs may also be included. It is sent to the inmate at the address of the jail:

Inmate's Full Name & Inmate ID#
Coos County Jail
PO Box 10
West Stewartstown, NH 03597

... and it will need to have a full return address including the name of the person who sent it or it will not be accepted.

To ensure inmates are able to make outgoing calls, their friends or family are able to add money to their account at the facility itself or online, and there will be access to phones from 6am to 11pm each day.

All visits are conducted by video and through an online accessible account. With this system the visiting hours are provided for the inmate that you wish to visit only, and once scheduled, are then completed through this account.

What happens during booking at Coos County Jail?

After arrest, individuals are processed at Coos County Jail, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.

  • Collecting DNA if necessary.
  • Conducting a physical search.
  • Confiscating personal belongings.
  • Providing a phone call.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How do you post bail in Coos County?

If someone is taken to Coos County Jail in W. Stewartstown for booking, the next steps depend on their case:

1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 603-246-3315.

Bail payments can be handled in various ways.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 603-246-3315.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Coos County can facilitate payment.
  • Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.
