About the Jackson County Detention Center

INTERESTING FACTS about the Jackson County Detention Center:

The 72-bed facility was built in 2003. It has a standard booking area, medical examination office and housing unit. It was not designed with expansion in mind.

Design – a pod for females and separate male pods for different levels of offenses. They are dormitory style with two levels — bunks up top and tables and showers on the lower levels. Inmates do have access to TV and telephones when they aren’t on lockdown. For those who need medical attention, they are seen in the mornings

Covering a large patch of the land it occupies, the brown and green building stretches low and long and is surrounded by open space and parking lots, the Jackson County Detention Center houses all of the misdemeanor and felony arrests throughout Jackson County and houses them while they wait for their trial, serve their sentence, or if they are being held for the state they will remain until their transfer.

Staff are able to answer some questions regarding a specific inmate, and general questions by phone by calling 828-586-2458 and an online portal allows for each inmate to be looked up at any time for details on their charges, bail, and status.

The work release program allows inmates who are approved and who have been sentenced to work release to be able to maintain their job upon arrest and attend each day, while returning to the facility after their work shift to continue their incarceration. Work Crew allows inmates to work in the community and to complete tasks for the campus and the county by helping to maintain yardwork, landscaping, maintenance, and others. Trustee inmates are able to have jobs within the building that provide support to their community with the jail.

Both male and female inmates are housed at this location, and the Jackson County Detention Center has space for up to 72 inmates with general population housing, solitary confinement, and is separated into housing units.

Upon arrival each inmate will undergo the booking process and an assessment on their security and history of detention to determine what housing assignment is best, what medical treatments are needed and how urgently, and what mental health needs are present.

After being assigned to a housing unit they will have access to phones every day to make outgoing calls, will be able to send and receive mail, and will be able to access visits. All visits are on Sundays 9am-11:30am and 1pm-4:30pm.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How do you pay bail for someone who has been arrested in Jackson County?

When an offender is arrested and brought to the Jackson County Detention Center in Sylva for booking, there are several outcomes after being processed.

1. The offender will be released with no bail, promising to return on a specific date to appear before a judge in either Municipal or Jackson County Court.
2. The offender is ordered to remain in jail until their court date.
3. The offender is allowed to be released after paying a specified bond or bail.  Call 828-586-2458 to get the exact amount.

The payment of an offender's bail or bond can take many shapes.

  • A cash bond is paid in full at the jail's bonding window or the clerk of court, usually by cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails also take debit or credit cards through a lobby kiosk or an online bond vendor for an added fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and the jail's number is 828-586-2458.
  • It can be paid using a bail company, licensed to do business in Jackson County.
  • Many courts accept land or a home as bond collateral; the owner shows clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, often double, using a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the property.
