Payne County Detention Center Inmate Search
Payne County Inmate Search: Where Your Person Is and What Comes Next
Adults arrested in this county usually go to the Payne County Detention Center, a 404-bed lockup managed through the Sheriff's Office, 606 S. Husband, Room 106, Stillwater, OK 74074. Here you can sort out where your person is, then get answers on charges, lawyers, visits, deposits, letters, belongings, warrants and hearings.
Your first tool is the Sheriff's inmate lookup. Enter the surname alone and scan the results, trying other spellings when nothing matches. A very recent booking might not be listed yet; one call clears that up.
Ring 405-372-4522 with the legal name and birth date in hand. Find out whether booking is done, which charges were listed and the bail figure. Our bail page deals with release money; our court page deals with hearings.
1. Payne County jail lookup: how do I use it?
With room for 404 men and women, the roster can run long. A few habits help:
- Pull up the Sheriff's jail search in any web browser.
- Type only the family name at first. Narrow with a first name when there are many hits.
- Swap in nicknames, both halves of a hyphenated name, or likely typos.
- Jot down a booking number if you spot one. Staff work faster with it.
- The Sheriff's website is being rebuilt, so the page may stall. When it does, phone 405-372-4522 and let staff run the check.
2. No match in the lookup. Where else to look?
Several things can hide a name:
- Booking isn't finished. Prints, photos and the intake health screening come first. Look again later in the day.
- A city arrest in Stillwater. Since July 1, 2026, the city has had no jail of its own and sends its arrests to the Payne County Detention Center. The police records desk can help: 723 S. Lewis St., Stillwater, OK 74074, 405-742-8222.
- Freed already. A bond went up, or a judge allowed release.
- Taken elsewhere. A bordering county, a hospital bed or federal custody.
The Sheriff's dispatch desk, 405-533-6816, can say which agency took someone in. A second net is the statewide Oklahoma VINE search, which reports custody status for jails on the system.
↑ Back to the question list3. Might Perry, Pawnee, Sapulpa, Chandler or Guthrie hold them?
They might, when the arrest was across the county line or another county wanted the person first. The five bordering jails:
- Noble County Jail, 721 Cedar Street, Perry, OK 73077, 580-336-3517; request the jail when someone answers
- Pawnee County Jail, 500 Harrison Street, Pawnee, OK 74058, 918-762-2565; also request the jail
- Creek County Jail, Sheriff's Office at 301 East Lee Ave., Sapulpa, OK 74066, jail desk 918-224-4964
- Lincoln County Jail, 811 Manvel Ave., Suite 14, Chandler, OK 74834, 405-258-1191
- Logan County Detention Center, 216 South Broad Street, Guthrie, OK 73044, 405-282-4100
Drumright is split between two counties, and its Creek side may book into Sapulpa.
↑ Back to the question list4. Are booking photos released?
Ask the Sheriff's Office at 405-372-4522. Oklahoma's open records law, 51 O.S. § 24A.8, opens certain arrest records to anyone: identity and description, the arrest's cause, and the jail register. Photos aren't named in that section, so photo requests are up to the office.
- News outlets can send their request straight to the Sheriff.
- For pictures taken by immigration officers, file through ICE's FOIA request page.
- Federal agencies hold back booking photos as a rule, with one exception: when the Marshals chase a fugitive, they sometimes release the picture.
5. Will VINE warn me about a move or release?
Yes. Oklahoma VINE tracks custody and sends notices. Look the person up on the VINE person search to see status and location. Then choose text, email or a phone call for updates, or register by phone at 877-654-8463.
- Transfers, escapes, recaptures, releases and deaths all trigger notices.
- Prison custody brings a fresh ID number, and you may have to re-register.
- Tracking pauses if the person goes to a Department of Mental Health hospital.
6. Getting out after a Payne County arrest: the basics?
Most Oklahoma arrests are bailable under the state Constitution (Okla. Const. art. II, § 8). A District Court judge fixes the figure on state counts. Stillwater city charges follow the city's printed bond list, which puts public intoxication at $175.
- Anyone may hand over the full sum in cash (59 O.S. § 1323).
- Or a licensed bondsman posts it, charging a premium you won't see again.
- Judges can also accept a signed promise, real estate or release terms.
- Second-or-later DUI? HB 1222 (November 1, 2025) leaves that bail to a judge alone.
Get the amount and the payment window from jail staff at 405-372-4522. The step-by-step version is on our bail and bond page.
↑ Back to the question list7. What is the person accused of?
Jail staff at 405-372-4522 can read the booking charges to you. Oklahoma treats the cause of an arrest as a public record (51 O.S. § 24A.8).
Charges at booking are a starting point. The District Attorney's office picks the counts that get filed, sometimes days later. After filing, the Oklahoma State Courts Network shows the case by name; you can also ask the Court Clerk at 405-372-4774 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
↑ Back to the question list8. Who arranges an appointed lawyer from inside?
From a cell, the request for appointed counsel starts with a form from jail staff. Relatives can also get it at the Court Clerk's criminal counter, 606 S. Husband Street, Room 206, Stillwater, OK 74074. Approval comes from a judge reviewing a sworn money statement (22 O.S. § 1355A).
- The $40 filing fee can be put on hold until a verdict or plea ends things.
- Here, the state hands appointed cases to contract counsel, P.O. Box 2024, Stillwater, OK 74076, 405-533-1220.
- Oklahoma Indigent Defense System headquarters: 111 N. Peters Ave, Suite 500, Norman, OK 73069, 405-801-2601.
A family may still hire private counsel whenever it chooses.
↑ Back to the question list9. Planning a visit to the Payne County jail?
Phone the Sheriff's Office at 405-372-4522 first. Get the current visiting times, the steps to be added as a visitor and the clothing rules. Hours can shift, so check before every trip.
- State jail standards tie visit length and group size to security alone (OAC 310:670-5-9).
- Bring a parent or guardian along with any visitor under 18.
- Carry a photo ID.
- Ask whether the jail's phone vendor offers video visits you can join from home.
Our jail visiting page describes how lobby and video visits typically run.
↑ Back to the question list10. How do deposits for food and calls work?
A commissary company appears on the Sheriff's resource list, but the jail sets the deposit rules. At 405-372-4522, ask which deposit methods are open, the fees, and if a lobby kiosk exists.
- Keep the full name and booking number handy.
- Cash in an envelope is never safe.
- Hold every receipt until the balance updates.
Common options are on our sending money page, and store items are covered on our commissary page.
↑ Back to the question list11. Phone time, texts and tablets: how do they work?
Oklahoma's jail code grants two or more local or collect calls to every new arrival (OAC 310:670-5-1). Many relatives get that first call within hours. After those, calling depends on the phone company the Sheriff links on its resource page.
- If your phone blocks collect calls, ask the phone company about a prepaid account.
- Check with the jail at 405-372-4522 about messaging and tablets.
Account setup is explained on our inmate phone page and our messaging page.
↑ Back to the question list12. Mailing letters to the Payne County jail?
Confirm the address and the ID number that goes below the name by calling 405-372-4522. Oklahoma's jail rules set these protections (OAC 310:670-5-9):
- Volume is unlimited, both in and out.
- Envelopes may be searched for contraband.
- Mail from judges and lawyers is unsealed only in the inmate's presence.
- Legal letters going out stay sealed.
Skip cash, loose stamps and taped-in extras. See our inmate mail page for typical rules.
↑ Back to the question list13. Wallet, keys, phone: where do they go?
Belongings are inventoried and stored at booking. On release day, staff verify identity, hand items back by that inventory and take a signature (OAC 310:670-5-1). Have the person go over each item before leaving.
- For a pickup while they remain inside, call the Sheriff's Office at 405-372-4522 and ask if a signed release is required.
- Evidence held by Stillwater police goes through the department's property and evidence unit, 723 S. Lewis St., Stillwater, OK 74074, 405-742-8306.
14. Sick, injured or in crisis behind bars?
Health screening is required right at admission. Each inmate is shown the sick-call process, and OAC 310:670-5-8 says a valid written request must get a nurse or doctor appointment scheduled within 48 hours, or sooner when urgent.
According to the Detention Center, a counselor working with Oklahoma State University interns meets inmates twice weekly, and a short-term mental health unit is under construction. Programs include GED, substance abuse and parenting classes.
Report medicines or health worries to the Sheriff's administration line, 405-533-6808. Concerns about conditions can be reported to the Department of Health's jail inspection program, 123 Robert S. Kerr Ave., Suite 1702, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 405-426-8170.
↑ Back to the question list15. Does a Payne County warrant name them?
County warrants are deputies' work, and the Sheriff's Office takes warrant calls at 405-372-4522. Wanted lists: the Sheriff's Payne County Most Wanted page, the Attorney General's Ten Most Wanted for Oklahoma, and the 15 Most Wanted kept by U.S. Marshals. Filed cases on OSCN show warrants too, or the clerk can look. Resolve one by hiring or requesting a lawyer and surrendering to the court behind it, or by phoning that court to arrange bond or reset the date. Court Clerk: 606 S. Husband Street, Room 206, Stillwater, OK 74074, 405-372-4774.
↑ Back to the question list16. How do I track upcoming hearings?
Two free sites list Oklahoma dockets. Try OSCN first, then ODCR. Weekday calls to the Court Clerk at 405-372-4774 work too.
City tickets keep separate calendars. Stillwater Municipal Court, 723 S. Lewis St., Stillwater, OK 74074, 405-742-8253, takes arraignments on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. on its docket weeks. Cushing Municipal Court sits in City Hall, 100 Judy Adams Blvd., Cushing, OK 74023, 918-306-4152.
What happens at each hearing is explained on our criminal court page.
↑ Back to the question list17. Held on a federal charge: who knows where?
The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma takes federal cases from here, at 200 NW 4th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 405-609-5000. A judge there rules on pretrial release (18 U.S.C. 3142).
- The U.S. Marshals Service tracks every pretrial federal prisoner. Call its office at 200 NW 4th Street, Room 2022, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 405-231-4206.
- Prisoners in transit commonly pass through the Federal Transfer Center, 7410 S. MacArthur Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73169, 405-682-4075.
- For a sentenced federal prisoner, try the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.
18. Taken by immigration agents: how to trace them?
Immigration custody usually begins with paperwork at the county jail:
- An I-247A detainer from ICE arrives.
- The county may keep the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- ICE then takes over. Its Oklahoma City office reports to Dallas and sits at 1220 Sovereign Row, Oklahoma City, OK 73108, 405-219-3199.
- One local detention site is the Cimarron Correctional Facility, 3200 S. Kings Hwy., Cushing, OK 74023. Its detainee information line, 918-225-3336, runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Check the ICE Online Detainee Locator using the name plus birth country.
On the state side, HB 4156, Oklahoma's immigration crime, remains frozen by a federal injunction pending appeal.
↑ Back to the question list19. Which site tracks a DOC prisoner?
The DOC Offender Lookup does this. DOC's usual estimate for leaving the county jail is 6 to 9 months, counted from sentencing day. An assessment stop sets the custody level, and a matching prison follows.
- Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 4345 N. Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73105, 405-425-2500.
- Facility profiles are on our Oklahoma prisons list.
- Prison mail must carry the inmate's name and ODOC number.
20. If police pick up a minor, what happens next?
Only briefly to an adult jail, if at all. Oklahoma allows six hours there for processing, and OAC 310:670-5-5 bars steady sight or sound contact with adults. Longer custody means a regional juvenile detention center in another county.
The Office of Juvenile Affairs covers youth cases here from District 4, 2319 W 7th Place, Stillwater, OK 74074, 405-743-1545. Staff there know the placement and the hearing date.
