About the Beaufort County Detention Center

The Beaufort County Detention Center is a medium to maximum security county jail located at 106 Ribaut Rd, Beaufort, SC 29902. It has 256 beds for inmates and is consistently over capacity. The 84,000 foot facility can handle the volume but they clearly need more space.

Since 2017 the county has been researching their detention center needs and have always put off making a decision. The county, home to the Paris island Naval Air Station and Paris Island Marine Corp Base is growing at a faster pace than South Carolina as a whole.

The mission statement of the Beaufort County Detention Center, phone number 843-255-5179, is to provide a safe and secure environment that complies with all requirements and regulations, with highly trained staff and to provide tools and education that will aid in the success of all inmates after their release. To do this there is ongoing training and practicing the tools and abilities they have been taught. While remaining incarcerated at this center there are ways to remain in contact with family and friends who are not, as this is a key part of success after incarceration.

There is mail that is delivered via US Postal Service, phone calls from inmates to their family, and visits that are permitted for those who have not lost the privilege. As there is no access to personal items that they had when they were arrested, and none can be delivered from home, a commissary can be used to supply their daily needs and hygiene products. This can be funded via money order to the jail, or through jailpackstore.com.

Visits are encouraged and can be held onsite in the visiting room or they may be completed via video from a remote location using an online service called IC Solutions. Onsite visits are allowed twice a week during visiting hours and they occur each day of the week except for Sunday. Offsite visits are not limited but must remain within visiting hours, as well as each visitor being registered with the system at icsolutions.com. Visiting hours for A 1 and Bravo 2 Bottom Tier are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 12:30-3:30pm an d8:30-11:30pm, and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 8:30-11:30am and 4:30-7:30pm. A 1 and B 2 top tier are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 8:30-11:30am and 4:30-7:30 pm, as well as Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 12:30-3:30pm and 8:30-11:30pm. A 2/SH-A/SH-B/MH/IH/B1/C1/Pre-class are all 8:30-11:30am, 12:30-2pm, 4:30-7:30pm and B 3 are 8:30-11:30 or 12:30-3:30 each day. B4 are not permitted visits, those who work within the jail will have visits 8:30-11:30 am, 12:30-3:30pm, and 4:30 to 11:30pm.

All your questions regarding bail, directions to the jail, visiting and sending money to your inmate, receiving phone calls from them and more, are detailed in the sections below this one. If you still have questions, call the jail at 843-255-5179.

Beaufort County Detention Center Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Beaufort County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Beaufort County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Beaufort County Detention Center?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Beaufort County and other South Carolina and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Beaufort County Detention Center will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Beaufort County Detention Center Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.
