McDowell Juvenile Detention Center

Holding less than 100 juveniles, the McDowell Juvenile Detention Center is a pretrial detention center accepting both male and female juvenile offenders from the county. The location is secure, surrounded by fencing for the outdoor recreational spaces, and with cameras to allow staff to monitor throughout the facility around the clock. Staff are trained in how to manage students without force, and how to use minimal force if necessary, including trauma informed training to provide the greatest support for the juveniles. Each of the basic needs are provided for, including clothing and bedding and the laundry services to keep them clean, nutritious meals and snacks based upon local school lunch guidelines, time for rest and sleep, and medical care both ongoing and as needed. Mental health support is provided for all juveniles, and they may receive counseling in group or individual settings. School days will mirror that of public schools, with teachers who attend the onsite classrooms for school hours for exactly that purpose. Rehabilitation focuses on treatments for any anger management, substance use, addiction, or behavioral concerns to provide the detainees with the tools, life skills, and social skills they need to build a successful life outside of the facility.
