About the Essex County Jail & Sheriff
Under the management of the Vermont Sheriff Association, the Essex County Jail is a small holding facility that houses around 60 inmates and can accommodate holding those who are waiting for their bail to be paid or who are serving a short sentence. Any sentences that extend beyond a few months or who require stricter security needs will be transferred to a larger facility that is located within the state. Only adult inmates are housed at this facility, with all juvenile offenders being processed through the juvenile system and housed at an appropriate facility with others in their own age range. Mail can be received and sent from the jail, but care packages are not permitted and only medication, glasses, and other medical necessities can be dropped off for inmates. Once they are incarcerated, they will be provided with their jail clothes, laundry services, bedding, and will be provided 3 meals each day that are designed to be nutritionally balanced. Medical and mental health care is provided via contracts within the community, and any emergency medical care will be provided. Phone calls are permitted to be made from the facility during the day room use hours of the day, after breakfast and before lockdown at night, with inmates having access when they are not attending classes or completing assigned duties. Visits are also encouraged and can be booked in advance to ensure that the inmate is available, and that space is ready, they can occur during the week after 8am and before 9pm and on weekends before 2:30pm.
