About the Orange County Jail & Sheriff
The Orange County Sheriff in Vermont works within the county and has contracts in place with many of the small towns and cities throughout the area to provide law enforcement services there as well. This allows them to use a cohesive approach to all law enforcement efforts and ensure that both state and federal laws are being enforced across the community. The county is 692 square miles and the sheriff office is located in Chelsea. With only a small holding are available any inmates who have been arrested and who have not yet been sentences are held at this location, with the majority of inmates awaiting their bail to be paid. Those who are sentenced are transferred to a larger local facility that houses inmates from not only Orange County but also surrounding counties. During their short stays, inmates are booked and provided a cell assignment, then are permitted to access the phones to call a friend, family member, or lawyer to assist them in securing their release. All inmates at this facility are short term and will not receive mail that is sent here, but those who face a longer sentence will be able to receive mail at their final location. Incoming phone calls are not accessible, and staff will only pass a message to an inmate in the case of a family emergency, so it is important to be available when an inmate calls if you wish to speak to them that day. Phones are accessible throughout the day and inmates can call at their convenience. Visits may be arranged by contacting the facility directly, however with a short term population there are not strict visiting hours that work for each inmate. All visits will begin after 7:30 in the morning and will end before 9pm, with times blocked off for meals and recreation.
