About the Washington County Jail & Sheriff
he county of Washington was established in 1914 and had a jail from as far back as 1787, and it has grown to over 60,00 residents. The original jail was replaced in 1832 by one that was built from granite, and that building still stands but has been reallocated to the local Probate Court. The current sheriff’s office does not have a jail attached and use the local jail house that is operated by the Vermont Department of Corrections. The sheriff office enforces the law within the county including road control, accident response, serving warrants and process serving for civil matter, providing security for each of the courts in the county and transportation of inmates from jail to court and back. They also have contracts with 10 towns that lie within the county for motor vehicle patrol as well as road safety and traffic functions. Any short term holds that are required to be held at the sheriff office will not be in that location for long enough to receive mail through the Postal Service, however they will have access to phones during their stay, will be safely transported to the local jail, and will be provided with the basic needs of food, water, and shelter. Once they have arrived at their final jail, they will be housed by the Vermont Department of Corrections, which provide daily access to phones they are able to phone friends or family from, and they will be permitted to accept visits on the weekends from 8:15am until 10:35pm depending upon which housing unit they are located in. During a phone call to an approved receiver, they will provide their housing and visitation information.
