New Mexico maintains their own state prison system; eight state-run facilities which consist of every security level; maximum, medium, and minimum, as well as two privately run facilities.
The New Mexico Corrections Department is where offenders are sent that have been convicted of felony crimes of murder, rape, assault, serious thefts and drug related offenses. These are offenses of at least one year, and all the way up to life imprisonment. New Mexico abolished the death penaly in 2009.

The New Mexico Juvenile Community Corrections oversees thirteen detention centers, residential centers and prevention programs for juvenile offenders who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to detention or personal rehabilitation, or are awaiting their court dates.
