Read through our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for guidance on finding an inmate in the Cullman County Detention Center, how jail rosters work, and what happens after someone is arrested and booked. If you still need help, call 256-775-4713.
The Cullman County Detention Center is licensed to hold 236 inmates, though it frequently has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails see a monthly turnover of at least 40% of inmates, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who remain longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Since those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Cullman County remain in custody at the Cullman County facility much longer.
Cullman County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 4,920 offenders per year.
The Cullman County Detention Center has been open since May 2005 at 1900 Beech Avenue SE in Cullman, next door to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office at 1910 Beech Avenue. Sheriff Matt Gentry’s office runs the 553-bed facility, and Warden Captain Todd Reynolds oversees it. There are three main housing units for men, two for women, and booking cells for new arrivals. The center holds pretrial felony defendants and misdemeanor offenders for the county courts, takes in prisoners for the cities around Cullman County, and also houses some federal prisoners for the U.S. Marshals Service. A staff of 44 detention officers works alongside a physician, nurses and a maintenance technician. The detention center’s number is (256) 735-2400, and the sheriff’s office is at (256) 734-0342.
The jail also runs an active work-release program for both men and women. Qualifying inmates live in dorm-style housing, go out to jobs in the community, and use their earnings toward court-ordered fines, fees and restitution. Ask the detention center whether your family member may qualify.
After booking, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires that the person be taken before a judge without unnecessary delay and no later than 72 hours after arrest. Cullman County is its own judicial circuit, the 32nd. The judge sets release terms, and under the Alabama Constitution bail is the rule for most charges. The exceptions are capital offenses where the proof is evident or the presumption great, and the offenses covered by Aniah’s Law (2022): murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children; and terrorism. For those, prosecutors can ask for a pretrial detention hearing. In May 2026, 81.6% of voters approved Amendment 1, adding solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, and the judge may depart from it. Release may be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property, or through a professional bail bond company. Before turning yourself in on a possible warrant, search Alacourt and talk with the sheriff’s office or a lawyer.
Visits, calls and messages all run through Inmate Sales, at inmatesales.com, (877) 998-5678, or the kiosk in the lobby. After that, and for remote visits, the cost is $0.20 a minute. Bring a government photo ID. A first-time caller gets one free 60-second call before an account is required.

For help, contact TextBehind at info@TextBehind.com. Legal mail and subscriptions go to the jail’s street address. Commissary money can be deposited at JailATM.com or at the lobby kiosk (cash or a debit/credit card with matching ID). The kiosk does not take coins, personal checks or foreign currency. Search for an inmate on VINELink or call the detention center.

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Cullman County Detention Center uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Cullman County Detention Center first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
