Every detail on this page is checked by hand, not scraped. This unofficial directory helps friends and family of incarcerated individuals find critical information — inmate lists, locations, bail resources, visitation hours, rules, and text, phone, email, and mail services — for jails, detention centers, and prisons across the United States.
You can get inmate information by calling the 950-bed Etowah County Detention Center at 256-549-5408, any time of day or night.
Anyone taken into custody in this county on a misdemeanor or felony charge is brought here for booking and processing. Based on the charges, they may be held until they are bonded out, released on their own recognizance, or remain in custody until the end of their trial.
The inmate search tool shows the names of people currently held at this facility.
Sentences of less than a year are served at this jail. Sentences longer than that are served in the Alabama State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Find information on this page about the visitation schedule and policies, funding an inmate’s account, mail, inmate calls, voicemail, emails and texts, tablet rentals, bail bonds, and commissary.
Once you find the inmate’s jail ID or booking number, save it for mail and other communication. If it’s not online, call Etowah County Detention Center at 256-549-5408.

Gadsden’s Etowah County Detention Center, at 827 Forrest Avenue, is one of the largest county jails in Alabama. The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office operates it with room for up to 950 inmates in ten direct-supervision housing units. It is accredited under the American Correctional Association’s Core Jail Standards, and its health care program is accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Both men and women are held here, mostly people awaiting trial or sentencing on misdemeanor and felony charges. For booking or inmate information, call (256) 549-5408 or email booking@etowahcountysheriff.com. The sheriff’s 24-hour non-emergency line is (256) 546-2825.
Search current inmates at https://www.etowahcountysheriff.com/roster.php, which also has a released-inmates view. After arrest and booking, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 calls for an initial appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Etowah County is its own judicial circuit, the Sixteenth. Look up court cases on Alacourt (https://v2.alacourt.com/). The sheriff’s warrants division is at (256) 549-5403, and there is a Most Wanted page on the sheriff’s website. Anyone who may have a warrant should call the office or an attorney before surrendering.
Bail is a right for most defendants under the Alabama Constitution. It may be denied in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Aniah’s Law (2022) also allows denial after a pretrial detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1, passed in May 2026 with 81.6% support, added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 bail schedule suggests $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, and judges can set amounts outside those ranges. Options include personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond using cash, property located in the county, or a licensed bail bond company. Cash, credit, and money orders are accepted; call the jail to confirm the amount.
