Calhoun County Jail Inmate Search

We’ve put the most common questions about finding an inmate in the Calhoun County Jail in one place: our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers. They also explain how rosters work and what happens after an arrest and booking. Call 256-236-5561 for more help.

The Calhoun County Jail is licensed for 430 inmates at any given time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of inmates turn over monthly, another 30% every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and approximately 8-9% stay six to twelve months. Stays longer than twelve months usually mean serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take time to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Calhoun County are forced to remain in custody at the Calhoun County facility much longer.

Approximately 8,600 offenders are arrested and detained each year by Calhoun County law enforcement agencies.

If someone you love was arrested by county officers in Calhoun County, they are most likely at the Calhoun County Jail, 400 West 8th Street in Anniston. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Falon Hurst, runs the jail from the same building. It is a medium-security, adults-only direct-supervision jail with about 430 beds. Adult men and women are held here while their cases are pending, along with people serving county sentences. Reach the jail at (256) 236-5561, booking and visitation questions at (256) 241-8032, and the sheriff’s main office at (256) 236-6600.

Start with the sheriff’s inmate roster. The office also posts active warrants and a most wanted list, and court records can be checked on Alacourt. Anyone who may be wanted should talk with the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning themselves in. Under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3, a person who is arrested sees a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Felony cases go to the Seventh Judicial Circuit, which Calhoun shares with Cleburne County.

Jail staff don’t set bonds and can’t change them. The arresting officer or a judge sets the amount, and holds such as probation violations, revocations, and failures to appear may have no bond until the person sees a judge. Once a bond is set, there are three ways to post it. A locally approved bonding company can write it (staff can’t recommend one). Owners can pledge real estate assessed at or above the bond amount, and every owner must sign. A cash bond is paid to the court, not the jail, and the jail needs the judge’s release order before it opens the door. Alabama’s constitution entitles most defendants to bail. The exceptions are capital cases where proof is evident or the presumption great, and, after a detention hearing under Aniah’s Law (2022), charges of murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, robbery, aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children, and terrorism. Voters added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle in May 2026 with 81.6% of the vote. Judges often start from Rule 7.2’s schedule ($10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, $1,000–$7,500 for DUI) but can depart from it. Other release options are personal recognizance and an unsecured appearance bond.

Visits are scheduled in advance through Inmate Sales at inmatesales.com or a lobby kiosk. Walk-ins aren’t allowed, and every visitor must be approved first. Visits happen by video, either from home or at on-site kiosks. Call the visitation line to confirm where the kiosks are before driving over. On-site sessions are free, last 20 minutes, and run 8:00 a.m.–9:50 p.m., with up to three visitors, a government photo ID, and children accompanied by an adult. Remote visits cost $0.20 a minute and run 7:00 a.m.–10:20 p.m. In-person contact visits need special approval from jail administration.

Anniston’s ACTS buses stop along Noble Street downtown, and the Multimodal Station on West 4th Street, the system’s transfer hub, is about half a mile from the jail. Buses run weekdays 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and Saturdays 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; the fare is $1.00. Call (256) 231-0010 for routes. Drivers can fill up at the Texaco at 720 Quintard Avenue or the Chevron at 1229 Wilmer Avenue. Sonic at 730 Noble Street and Ocean Seafood & Chicken at 700 Noble Street are a few blocks east.

Letters must be regular letter size in plain white, pre-posted envelopes. Packages, oversized envelopes, and peel-and-stick stamps are refused, and mail is scanned before delivery. Address it to the person’s name, 400 West 8th Street, Anniston, AL 36201. Books come only from Barnes & Noble. Deposits can be made at the lobby kiosk with cash or a card, or online through JailATM. Legacy Commissary fills orders once a week, usually Sundays. Phones run through Combined Public Communications ((877) 998-5678). A contracted health provider staffs the jail. Families can’t drop off medication, and questions go to the jail nurse at (256) 241-8033. Volunteer clergy hold regular services. When someone is released, their remaining account balance is returned as a check or debit card.

What happens during booking at Calhoun County Jail?

After arrest, individuals are processed at Calhoun County Jail, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.

The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.

Here are the typical stages of the booking process at Calhoun County Jail:

  • Verifying the person’s identity.
  • Taking mugshots.
  • Questions regarding medical and mental health history, along with drug and gang affiliations.
  • Collecting DNA if necessary.
  • Conducting a physical search.
  • Confiscating personal belongings.
  • Providing a phone call.

If you need details about an offender’s bail or bond, contact the facility at 256-236-5561.

How do you post bail in Calhoun County?

If someone is taken to Calhoun County Jail in Anniston for booking, the next steps depend on their case:

1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 256-236-5561.

Bail payments can be handled in various ways.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 256-236-5561.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Calhoun County can facilitate payment.
  • Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Calhoun County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Calhoun County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Calhoun County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
