While licensed for 96 inmates, the Cleburne County Jail is often forced to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails turn over at least 40% of their population monthly, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. Approximately 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder, and because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Cleburne County remain in custody at the Cleburne County facility much longer.
Cleburne County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain roughly 1,920 offenders each year.
Sheriff Jon Daniel’s office runs the Cleburne County Jail, which shares the sheriff’s headquarters at 140 Lambert Drive in Heflin. The jail has about 96 beds. It holds people arrested in Heflin, Ranburne, Fruithurst and the rest of the county, whether they are waiting for trial or sentencing on misdemeanor or felony charges or serving a county sentence. The main number, (256) 463-7336, is answered around the clock. For jail questions during business hours, Jail Administrator Clay Smith can be reached at (256) 463-2277, ext. 106. The corrections division also offers chaplain services.
Booking comes first. After that, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires an initial appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest. Cleburne County is in the Seventh Judicial Circuit with Calhoun County. You can follow court dates and case filings on Alacourt at v2.alacourt.com. If you believe you have a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or talk to a lawyer before turning yourself in.
Most people in Alabama have a right to bail. Judges can deny it in capital cases when the proof is evident or the presumption great. They can also deny it after a pretrial detention hearing under Aniah’s Law (2022), which covers murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children; and terrorism. In May 2026, 81.6% of voters approved Amendment 1, which added solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. When bail is set, it may be personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property or through a licensed bondsman. Rule 7.2 suggests ranges such as $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony and $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, but judges can go higher or lower. Call the jail for the amount and payment options.
Before you drive over, call (256) 463-7336 to confirm current visiting times and set up a visit. No public bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive. Shell at 1945 Almon St and Chevron at 2216 Almon St are nearby for fuel. McDonald’s at 1816 Almon St and Jack’s Family Restaurant at 115 Ross St are good for a quick meal.
The sheriff’s inmate roster is at https://www.cleburnecountyso.org/inmate_roster.php, and you can sign up for custody alerts through VINELink.
