Winston bail basics

Winston bail amounts come from a Double Springs judge using the state chart. If Blake Drive shows "no bond," that judge decides later, and violent cases may draw an Aniah's Law hearing. Beginning May 19, 2026, voter-approved Amendment 1 lets the court withhold bail in attempted murder and shooting into a lived-in apartment or vehicle. Cash, bail agents, deeds and signature releases are options; Alabama adds its 3.5% and $35. See the Winston bail guide.

From the Double Springs jail for state prison: what to expect

Someone sentenced to more than twelve months can expect to serve that time in an ADOC prison. For now, they stay in the Double Springs jail while ADOC has a bed ready, which can take weeks. When space opens, they are taken to an intake unit to be processed. Workers there rate new arrivals by physical and mental health, any gang ties and custody level. Then, they transfer to a prison that fits them.

To find them, use the ADOC online search. The Alabama state prison guide lists every state prison.

Picked up by federal agents in Winston County? The basics

A federal case normally starts when teams from IRS Criminal Investigation and the ATF make an arrest. Winston County falls under the Northern District's Western Division; hearings are held at the Tuscaloosa courthouse: Richard Shelby Federal Building and Courthouse, 2005 University Boulevard, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, 205-561-1670. The Tuscaloosa building isn't staffed daily; try the clerk in Birmingham, 205-278-1700 first. The old Jasper division ended in December 2024, and Winston County cases moved to Tuscaloosa. Often the next weekday, the person faces a magistrate judge for the first hearing. U.S. court has no bail schedule. The judge rules on if they stay in custody at a release hearing under the 1984 Bail Reform Act. An officer from pretrial services first talks with the defendant and gives advice to the court.

Check VINELink for Winston County; there the hold can be listed. This district's Marshals staff knows where the person is: 205-829-6611, 1729 5th Avenue North, Room 240, Birmingham, AL 35203. Some federal detainees wait in a local jail contracted by the Marshals until sentencing. After a federal sentence, they move into the federal prison system (BOP). Find them through the BOP locator.

ICE detainer at the Double Springs jail: what to expect

  • At booking, their prints go to federal databases. Then ICE might place a detainer at the jail.
  • Posting bail won't clear this hold. It only starts the clock.
  • The limit is 48 extra hours past release. Saturday won't stop the 48 hours.
  • ICE officers often come for them in person within those 48 hours. If nobody comes, the sheriff should release the person.
  • ICE itself picks the next facility.
  • Every Alabama case is run from ICE's New Orleans ERO office, located at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.
  • The ICE locator searches for people with the A-number and birth country. Anyone without the A-number can type in first and last name plus birth date and birth country.

Can I get Winston County mugshots online?

When a mugshot isn't online, the media can call the sheriff's office at 205-489-8765 to request it. ICE shares booking photos only through an ICE records request that ICE approves. U.S. booking photos aren't given with reporters or the public. Federal policy keeps release to a few cases: to find someone who escaped, for urgent community safety, or when publishing it speeds an arrest or a public warning.
