The Gila County Jail is a 124 bed jail in the city of Globe, Gila County, Arizona. The Gila County Jail is licensed to house 124 inmates, but it is often forced to hold many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arizona turn over at least 40% of their inmates per month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, with approximately 8-9% incarcerated six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Gila County remain in one of the Gila County facilities much longer.
Arizona’s court rules start with the presumption that a defendant will be released on their own recognizance. Bail is set only when a judge finds that isn’t enough to ensure the person returns to court or to protect public safety. Many people arrested in Arizona walk out without paying anything.

Gila County Jail is a unique and historic facility located in Globe, Gila County. It was built in 1910 with doors and levers from the old territorial jail in Yuma. It is located at 1100 South Street Globe, AZ 85501 and is part of Globe’s Historic District.

The Gila County Jail in Globe is the main jail for Gila County and is run by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. It sits at 1100 South Street, Globe, AZ 85501, and the jail can be reached around the clock at (928) 402-8666. It is a 124-bed facility that holds men and women arrested anywhere in the county. Like other Arizona county jails, most people inside are awaiting trial; others are serving county jail sentences of up to one year, and some have been sentenced to prison and are waiting for transfer to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry. The sheriff’s Jail Bureau provides medical care and inmate education programs. The county also keeps a smaller jail in Payson, so if you can’t find someone in Globe, call there too.
After an arrest, the person is booked into the jail and must see a judge or commissioner for an initial appearance within 24 hours, as Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.1 requires; if that doesn’t happen in time, the person must be released. Arizona Rule 7.2 starts from the presumption that a defendant goes home on their own recognizance, and many people walk out after that first hearing without paying anything. When a judge decides more is needed to make sure the person returns to court or to protect a victim or the community, the options include an unsecured bond, a cash bond, a secured appearance bond, or a bond posted through a licensed bail bond agent. Under Article 2, Section 22 of the Arizona Constitution, a judge can deny bail after a hearing only for capital offenses or certain serious sexual offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great, a new felony committed while already out on bail for another felony, or when the person poses a substantial danger and no conditions would keep the community safe. If you think you or a family member has a warrant, talk with the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Visiting runs Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and again from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m.; the jail is closed to visits on Monday. Each inmate gets up to two hours of visits per week, and they become eligible only after their initial appearance. Visitors need valid government photo ID showing date of birth, anyone under 18 must come with an adult, and anyone who has been in custody at the Gila County Jail within the past six months will not be allowed to visit. Leave sheer or see-through clothing, tank and halter tops, bare midriffs, swimsuits and clothing with profanity or offensive designs at home, and don’t take pictures. The jail is just off East Ash Street (U.S. 60). Copper Mountain Transit runs a weekday-only $1 bus between Miami and Globe, but most visitors drive. Nearby on East Ash Street are a Circle K at 1250 E. Ash St. and a 76 station at 1501 E. Ash St. for gas, plus Jack in the Box at 1390 E. Ash St. and McDonald’s at 1608 E. Ash St. for a quick meal.

Mail with perfume, lipstick, stickers, confetti, metal or plastic, or images of nudity, weapons or gang references is refused. Photos can be sent marked “Attention Property Master,” and publications need advance approval and must come straight from the publisher. The Gila County Jail ONLY allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office unless noted otherwise.
