Benton County Juvenile Detention Center

This low security detention center is found in Bentonville, Arkansas and houses male youth offenders who are accused or convicted of crimes. Only those who have had charges filed against them will be held at this location and they will remain until their trial has been completed and a sentence has been handed out. When sentenced to detention they will remain at this facility until they have completed the time assigned. While at the facility all of the basic needs that any youth has are met, and this includes not only their regular schoolwork according to the local school board and is provided by licensed teachers, all meals are balanced and provided three times each day, and medical staff are present to provide prescription medications and to treat both emergencies and seasonal ailments as well as minor injury and illness. Physical education is considered a vital part of maintaining health, both physical and mental, so exercises, activities, and recreation are provided daily. Mail: Juvenile offenders are allowed to both send and receive mail to remain in contact with family and friends who have been approved to have contact. Phones: One phone call each week is permitted to immediate family, and incoming calls are not accepted from either friends or family. Anyone who receives a call must be approved in advance, and often only parents or guardians are included. Visitation: Visiting hours occur on Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 3:40pm and parents are encouraged to visit, as well as any legal guardians who are responsible for the care of the youth offender. All visits must be approved in advance, and visits may be cancelled due to behavior in the days before the visit is meant to occur.

The Benton County Juvenile Detention Center holds a license for 20 inmates, but it often has to make room for many more offenders, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Arkansas, at least 40% of the population turns over every month. Every 90 days, another 30% turns over, and every six months, another 20%. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are typically facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Benton County remain in custody at one of the Benton County facilities much longer.

In Arkansas, bail before trial is a constitutional right for all charges except capital offenses where the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Benton County decide the terms of release, which can range from release on recognizance to conditions of release to a set bail amount.
